Title: Tell me what this is. . . . . OUCH!
Post by: Steve on May 13, 2008, 03:11:20 PM
At this time we are dependant on Polaraco as the family car because of my wifes condition.  The big plus is NO AIR BAGS.  She is gladly riding in the car and except for some noise coming from the trunk, likes it.  (Hint Bob)

Sunday I went across a set of Rail Road Tracks near hear with a Polaraco full of people.  My Sister-in-law was in the back seat.  (Need I say more.  She's the "Ditz Queen") I heard a clink and then something wrap the bottom of the car.  Looked in the rear view mirror and saw nothing.  Instead of investigating, my wife wanted to get home.  The car is still moving and not giving me any trouble so I kept going.

I drove the car to work yesterday, no problems.  Today I ran up town and made a bend in the road.  The car lurched and started to make a hello a racket.  So tonight after I did the dishes, I took the car for a ride again.  On certain moves the car banged and lurched, causing the wheel to slightly jerk to the right.  I also noticed the car alittle wishy washy on turns and a strange feel in the wheel.

This afternoon I spoke with Butch (HemiFury) and told him I thought I left the strut rod bolt loose.  He thought it was the rear Diff clutches.  They can make you feel like the wheel is coming off, which is what I thought it might be earlier today.  Nope that wasn't it either.  Then I thought the shock broke.  Then maybe the new lower bushing I installed. . Nope Nope Nope.  Jacked it up, nothing loose.

Anyway, I removed this from under the car this evening and robbed a temp replacement from the VOAB.

So what is this little darling????  The Hint is, it's aftermarket.  There's more hints above.

I want to say it's the muffler bearing retainer, but...

Looks like the bracket that holds a bushing and ties the sway bar and the strut rod together.at the control arm..

I want to say it's one of the center sway bar mounts (minus the rubber) on the front but it looks a little slight to be that. Say it isn't so...

Actually Leaburn hit it

It's the link to the strut Rod from the sway bar.  Snapped that sucker right off.

Had similar thing happen to a car I had years ago, while on vacation with my wife in my 85 malibu 4dr, I blew off the drivers side sway bar to lower control arm link.  We were on a very winding hwy and at that time I drove like my cars were on fire.  It was a handful to keep it on the road until I got home...(http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif)

So how hard are you turning corners?    LOL!

Bars not in some kind of bind is it?    No adjustability really  on the bar,  just mount & go right?

Probably just fatigue & snapped.

I guess.  That's the side I changed the lower control arm in.  It was straight then.  As a result, the left side is bent now.

I ordered 2 replacements.  This is from one of those 1" sway bars allegedly for a C.  I like the bar, it handles much better than the Virgin. . . .

So maybe that bad lower control arm put the whole thing in a bind & weakened it till it snapped.    Just happened to finally break after you changed the arm.

Makes sense.

Who knows. . . It broke.  I never saw an original break.  But they are heavier than these.  The stress is on the flat piece so maybe I'll make a new flat bar from some 1" wide 3/16 stock.  That will stop the sucker from doing that again. . . .  I just need new loops.

This sway bar appears to be right, but doesn't fit like an original.  I had to shorten the links to keep it from rubbing on the strut rods.  That also improved the cornering as it doesn't lean any where near what it did before the shortening.

I hope I get the new links tomorrow.  I am going to be putting in the right control arm this weekend. . .I hope.  Once I do that. . . I AM DONE UNDER THERE!

OK  Be that way.  The plague with this car is over.

Today I changed the left control arm and found the bracket on the left side broken also.  Now VOAB is missing 2 of them!

I told Bobby the other night I've been running Polaraco all over the place for the last month.  When I say Daily Driver. . I mean it.  200, 250 a week running around.  Been spitting out the miles like a champ other than those brackets.  Mileage has been holding at around 16 with no highway.  Lots of short trips

It depends; how much is such a blessing worth?
