Title: AAARRRGGHH!

Typical.  Three days before I'm supposed to take Wanda on a major road trip, SOMETHING seizes up and fries my belts.

It's either the compressor or the alternator (or both? (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley18.gif)).  I think it's the alternator because I was hearing this grinding noise that sounded like someone was vigorously shaking a tin can full of marbles.  Then I heard a "ping".  Then I smelled that coppery-ozone kinda smell that usually accompanies overheated electrics.  I managed to limp home and my poor belts were literally smoking.  However, I'm not 100% sure about it being the alternator because my ammeter didn't register
a discharge - which it should have if the alternator went and the
engine was still running.  I don't think it was the water pump as the temp didn't spike - and I doubt it was the crank going.



So, yeah, I had to tow Wanda to the local Dodge dealership.  They should have a spare part (alternator or compressor) for this car on hand, right?  I mean, I know it's pretty easy to put either one of these things in - I just want the car by Friday.

The Alternator can be had in any auto parts store.  Doesn't matter if it's the 'ol standby 65 Amp or the big ol' cop special 100 Amp.
 
The A/C compressor is another story.  There were so many models used back then.  I had one around here, but it was missing the clutch.  You can try the rebuilders for that. . . I use Florida Compressor in Largo.
 
Which belts took the dump?  The two main ones?  Or didn't you look?

Easy way to find out would be to loosen the the alternator...therefore free up the compressor as well adn then spin both by hand, whichever one doesn't move is your culpret.
 
Yeah as Steve said alternators can be had anywere, wreckers, jobber....the A/C compressor could be an old RV2 set-up or the newer aluminum unit chrysler went to after the RV2.

I'll bet it's the air injection pump.....happened to me once.

OHHH I hadn't tought of that....yup could be that too.  If it is the air pump then have them cut the belt off and you can drive it fine without it and fix it another day.

It's not the air injection - the belt's been off that for years.  Just for S&Gs I checked it a while ago and it spun freely.  That way if I have to throw a belt on quickly to pass inspection it won't be an issue. (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif)
 
I'm starting to think it might be the AC compressor.  It's orignial 1979 vintage - which means it's horribly inefficient and heavy.  The AC didn't work when I bought the car so it's not like I'm going to miss it all of a sudden.....
 
Should I just remove the compressor (for now)?  If I can't do that, is there an easy way to bypass it without having to replace the damn thing and spend a small fortune doing so?

I thought that had the Aluminum round one on it.  Not that old clunky RV2 V job.  My 80 had the round one. 


If it's the RV2, junk yard.  If it's the round one, go rebuilt.  I think you can still buy clutches for them as long as the housing isn't chewed up.  My suggestion though is to get a total rebuilt and get it over with.

You could just remove the unit but you would have to find a car in the reckers with teh bracket and pulley so you can still run your belts properly.
 
Without the A/C pump you will not be able to run your belts, unless you can get a complete "NON A/C" set-up out of the wreckers, that would be..pullies (water pump, and crank) Power steering brackets, Alt. brackets and misc.
 
Is your A/C unit the RV2 or aluminum unit??

It's definitely the RV2.  ....Big 'ol hunk-'o-pig iron sitting atop the engine sapping power and existing as a monument to inefficiency.

But my original instincts were correct - it was the alternator that was bad, after all.

Can you believe the dealership wanted to charge me $200 for a new alternator?! (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley7.gif)  I was able to talk them down to $100 - still about $40 more than I wanted to spend.  But it was worth it to me for the same-day convenience.  Wanda's back and ready to cruise tomorrow.  (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley32.gif)

Steve 1980 was the first year for the Sanden a/c compressor
now is the time to switch to the Sanden unit to save both weight
and have less parisitic loss

The 'ol V-2 worked well though, they were pretty much bulletproof in all my Mopes.
