Post by: Snotty on April 23, 2008, 10:09:20 AM
Reading Jay's question about mufflers and the responces made me think: do you know why "Turbo" mufflers got that name?

For the same reason GM called their automatic transmission Turbo-hydramatic.  It sounded good. (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley26.gif)

I didn't know that about the TH, however.  I did always wonder where that name came from.

Actually, Steve, I was talking about Carman's answer.  They came from the '64 Turbo Corvair.  Due to the exhaust routing for the turbo a shorter, fatter muffler was needed that would also allow better flow for quicker exit.  Gearheads found they worked great on V-8s and Viola'!

You just described what they did, not how they got their name.

No soup for you!!

I have a feeling, we are both right.  It was designed for the Corvair. OK, I didn't know that.  But from what I read, that is the principle inside.

Now you need TWO prizes.

I shudder thinking what the prize might be...  It'll be GREEN I'm thinkin'...

Good trivia though!  My mom had a Corvair Spyder vert back when Ralph Nader decided to leave em' alone and pursue faulty toasters .  Her's was a '66 if I remember correctly.

I've always wanted a Corsa.  'Vair people will know the only years they existed.

One of my Youth Directors had ne when I was a kid.  I loved the 6 gauge package , the 4-speed, and the 4 carbs.  Plus, it was one of the first cars I ever drove.

Could never find one for a price I could swing though.
