California to require smog on pre-76 cars

I put this in the "BS" section because that's where it belongs......the California legislature is proposing a bill that would require smog controls on all pre-1976 cars........of course, most don't have them, so 'THE OWNER'S WOULD HAVE TO ADD THEM"..........can you imagine adding smog controls to a 1968 Hemi GTX.....???

My 1967 300, sold new here in Fresno, CA as an ordered car already has the smog controls that Chrysler outfitted it with in order to comply with California's regulations in 1966. So don't think a Hemi powered car sold in California would NOT have smog equipment, because you would be mistaken.  It just wouldn't have what Brands G and F decided to use, is all.

Chrysler was able to deal with the requirements for reducing vehicle emissions without the use of an air pump, unlike GM and Ford, by retarding timing using vacuum switches, having the static timing of the engines retarded versus cars sold in the rest of the US (aka 49-state or Federal Emission cars), leaner carb jetting,  until requirements were increased in the early 1970's and the use of catalytic converters and smog air pumps were almost mandatory.  Electronic ignition helped a LOT with reducing Hydrocarbons since the timing was better controlled, and a hotter spark was the result of the longer dwell, without the problems inherent to mechanical point systems.

Requiring retro-fitting of catalytic converters and such is a waste of time and $, especially since there are far FEWER cars on the roads out here that are pre-1976 than the throwaway econo-boxes from the 1980's and 1990's that are the worst offenders (yeah, I'm talkin' about YOU in your crappy 1985 Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic, Rice-boy).

It's all a money grab from a group that the legislators think would have the smallest support via a divide-and-conquer tactics, rat-bastids

We hadn't heard what they are going to be asking for on the cars yet.  Are Cats going to be manditory?  I was guessing when I said that a while back

Bad news, what starts in Kalifornia usually migrates to Massachusetts.  That would really suck.

Just remember to VOTE THE BUMS OUT come election time-that will
send them a CLEAR MESSAGE. PA is not very car friendly, but, when you
have a Classic plate you do not have to have an
emission test just a State inspection. The Antique plate is exempt
from both State inspevtion and Emission testing.

This is a load of crap, maybe they should all take a long walk off of a
short pier. Your tax dollars at work people, these bums focus on the
wrong things.

I heard on the news they want to pass a law making it illegal to honk your horn in NYC traffic.......sounds like you have the same mental disorder on the East Coast......if mother flockers would learn how to drive and get the cell phone out of their (ear), one wouldn't have to honk to get the idiots moving......

It's all a tax grab...welcome to Vancouver BC....here even our collector and Vintage plate cars have to pass "ONE" emissions testing before they can be registered...and anything that doesn't meet the criteria of these special plates has to pass every year to get insurance.  And if you don't pass you get to keep paying until you do....

When you get your classic car inspected here in the
Garden State, If your car has regular plates they emissions test your
car for the emissions specifications of the year your car is made. That
is if your car has emissions specifications, so I guess all in all its
not that bad here, I believe its some kind of grandfather clause here.

Hey y'all bring em to me not only will I provide up keep but there is no smog testing where I live. Plus here in Colorado or at least in Colorado Springs any way if the car is 25 or older you only need to test it once then pay for a 5 yr registration without any type of restrictions. Now the Denver area I'm not sure about. I do know that in the area I live in we dont do smog tests. But I do agree that the idea of requiring smog controls on vehicles that were not manufactured with them is an idiotic idea not to mention that with the additives in fuel now days I have seen older non smog cars that run cleaner the these new ones. That was back when i did emission testing in colorado springs.
