Our trip to Erie, and why...
« on: March 10, 2008, 03:36:37 PM »

Why would anyone travel during one of the most advertised winter storms of Pennsylvania's 2007-2008 winter season?  Siss and I drove into it just north of Mercer on I-79 Friday afternoon and witnessed 15 accidents in less-than 60 miles!

Why?

My Mom had a severe heart attack.  She was air-flighted to Erie's Hamot Medical Center from Warren on early Thursday.  She was bleeding internally from the stint placed in her heart and was unconscious from late morning Thursday until the time we left today.

According to her doctors her vitals are fine, but she only awoke only once (today) for a short period of time.  She saw my dad and sister.  We wanted to stay for this chance encounter but could not...

People have heart attacks and stints inserted in America every minute of every day but why is mom's so different?  She is 58, and lightly smokes.  We've went round and round over the years...  She's 4'-10" and a real fighter!  I was taller than she when I was eleven but she NEVER took my Shiite!

Siss and I (along with Dad and Sister and Gramma) need a few prayers, you too Snotty! (You know how we feel about you...)  Thanks Folks

The storm.

Erie got nearly 16-inches of fresh new snow between the time we were en'route until Sunday morning.

View NW towards Erie's Mellon building and the lake.  Saturday AM

General view SW.  FWD cars plowing snow...

Sunday's adventure to the Soldiers and Sailors home.  The blue sky was a wonder to behold after the storm

This is W. 10th Street, NOT plowed...  The thrown snow is from 4WD's!  I think it's a Chevy

More winter fun...  still en'route to Erie Soldiers and Sailors home.  (Dad and I escaped to visit my grandad for a bit...)

Mom and dad just traded thier Buick Lucerne on a new Eddie Bauer Exploder.  Our Jeep was safely parked in the hotel garage.

I'm done ranting now.  Just worried about my mom...

Your Mom, from your description, sounds a lot like mine. She's also very short, about 5' 0",  tougher than nails and will turn 91 this year after experiencing lots of medical emergencies over the years. I stopped worrying about her ailments years ago because I know she's not going any where until she's darn good and ready and not one second sooner.

If I was you, I sure wouldn't be telling momma much about the road conditions you drove through.

My prayers will include both your mother and mine - but I suspect both would tell us to "just settle down!"

Thanks gang!

This is actually Matt, and NO I am NOT having an identity crisis .  I updated my e-mail addy in my profile and am now restricted

The news wasn't too good today.  Mom's doctor decided to take her off of her respirator, which didn't go well.  Her vitals went knutzo and she had to go right back on it with an increase in pressure.  My Sister also said that her blood pressure has been all over the chart all day and she has contracted pneumonia...  I haven't spoken to dad yet, but will later after he gets home.

We luv you guys

Well, things are a little better as of today.  Mom is finally out of the ICU after two weeks.  She's still on the respirator but it is decreased.  She had a tracheotomy on Tuesday as it was the last resort to start weaning her from her sedation meds and the machine air.  Dad said she opened her eyes for a little bit today too!

Monday she is being transferred to a long-term cardio-pulmonary rehab facility located in Erie, so the damage to her heart is worse than her doctors first believed.

It's a step in the right direction, albeit small.  Siss and I thank yoos all for the thoughts and prayers.
