Yep, chrome/stainless vibrate rubs against the metal and wears it out. Sucks, but what about lead or lead substitute so it doesn't do the same thing? These are horrible locations to replace metal what with all the welding and grinding.

Here's a trick that might help later down the road. I have seen trim that had a piece of thin black rubber attached to the edge so it rests against the body panel, prevents rubbing, the dust getting in between and collecting (moisture settles and eats away on flat spots on the bottoms and rusts), and can keep it from rattling, too. You can usually go to a auto glass shop and find clips cheaper than the resto stores.

Was watching a few episodes of "Boyd Coddington is a Richard" on Velocity tonight, and noticed a Mustang they were working on had the same type of rust holes.  They cleaned them up, and brazed them closed.  Food for thought.

Glad there was no permanent eye damage Lea!
Your body work looks very professional.
I'm not very good at it,  but I enjoy it more than mechanical work.
Wish my cars ('58 and '64) were as far along as yours, luckily the body work needed is minimal, neither car runs yet, however hoping to get at least one on the road this year. Seem to have less energy every year, but your saga of sticking to working on your '68 is inspiring!
