Barge on Budget 2014 Bit of a lull.
« Reply #210 on: April 27, 2008, 04:35:40 PM »

I spent a whole day on the car.
Ray showed up around 10:30 AM and left about 3.I kept at it upuntil an hour ago.
Ray did a little bit of welding touching up a few spots that were overlooked.
I finished up grinding down the trunk floor pan to get it ready to paint.
I then crawled underneath and picked up where I left off cleaning the underbelly of the beast.
We took a break and made a list that we must stick to.
Priority is to get the undercarriage finished while it is still up in the air.
1.Grind floor patched from underneath.Clean 'em up so they will not be as noticeable.
2.Chaulk seams in panels replaced.
3.soft-wire brush underbelly clean.
We agreed to leave the good undercoating alone.Just remove the loose flaky schtuff.
4.Any bare metal on the belly will get Epoxied.
5.Paint the outer edges of the belly body color
6.Undercoat the belly and inner wheel wells.

Today I stopped afte #3 on our list.
I got as far as the door pillars when I was underneath the car.
Looks good.I did start from the rear where I left off last year.
Tomorrow I will continue removing the flaky undercoating.
I am hoping to get as far as the firewall.

Are you scraping cold with a putty knife or using a heat gun to soften
the tar?  On mine I'm debating removing it all or just the loose
stuff... the perfectionist keeps saying "take it all off!"!

I thought about that too.
I did remove all of it in the quarter panel extensions and wheel wells to check for any rust.
The floor pans have been taken care of and most of the factory undercoating is in good shape. So,no need to remove all of it from there.Just freshen it up with new undercoating.
It is a lot of hard work-especially lying on your back.
I am using a coarse wire brush attachment on my air powered drill, angle die grinder with coarse buff pads, putty knife, small bal peen hammer, screwdriver and propane torch.
I wear a face mask, safety glasses,an old hat and old clothes.
Do what is needed and still have that "looks good" result

I found a heat gun on HI softens it up quick and then you can scrape it clean in one pass with the putty knife, in the areas that are pretty flat, at least for the tar/sound-deadener inside the trunk...Not the funnest work in the world that's for sure.  I'm afraid of any tar covering up rust I don't see coming back to haunt me...

I agree.
One of the main reasons why I am stripping off as much as possible. There is rust under it after 40 years.I am prepping it and then it will be sealed off so no more rust while I own the car.

From tonight.
I spent a few hours cleaning up the fllor pan--one area at a time.
Note where factory body color shows where the undercoating hels and rust where the undercoating fell off or was dried out and flaky.
I noticed that the hump had NO paint-just hard surface rust and the undercoating was sprayed with the drivetrain and lines already installed in the car.

When I needed to be in an upright position,I took a break and practiced spraying trunk spatter. Not perfect, but another coat would not hurt.
Though not finished,I ran out of spatter paint.
Spot not painted is where I sat in the trunk..LOL
Tail panel looks good. You can hardly see the repairs we did to it.That makes me happy.
I used Plasti-cote #501 black/grey spatter over a semi-gloss black rust paint

Looks great with that spatter done!  - do they make one in a
lighter grey color? Some that I've seen were pretty flat, with little
to no shine, I don't know what's kosher for a late '50s FL.
