The A/C compressor on the Newport Custom is seized.  Also, the bearing in the a/c clutch is starting to make noise so that needs attention also.  I want to replace both the clutch and the compressor but I don't want to charge the a/c compressor yet until I get a PHD in Autotempology. 
 
Can I replace both components and not connect the wire so it doesn't turn on?  As long as the clutch doesn't engage it should be OK discharged, correct?
 
Any help appreciated.

Yep
 
The clutch is free standing.  It rotates by itself and the rest of the car is not dependant on any thing but it being where it's mounted

No problem Bog.  When you replace the unit, just don't connect the wire to the compressor.  It will free-spin until your're ready to recharge it.

Perfect!  Now that I ALMOST have heat in the garage, it'll get done soon.  It will be more important to get the convertible back together.

On a similar theme, don't make the mistake I made and remove the fan belt on your modern vehicle's emmissions air pump....(my Dakota always sounded stupid with it running) ....exhaust gases back-fed up thru the plumbing and seized the unit

Rob...You can connect the wire to the compressor if you want, the compressor shouldn't engage with no charge in the system.  There is a pressure valve on the top of the drier and if the pressure in the system drops below the preset pressure then no power will go to the clutch assembly on the compressor.


 
 
Bob...I too had done the "disconnect the smog pump because it sounds goofy"  Yup the exhaust gasses will come back up and seize everything up...BUT...with a chain wrench and some time I was able to free mine back up!!!

I'll be doing this soon. In the meantime, I'll be replacing the steering pump in the New Yorker.  I bought a Federal steering pump bracket to replace the "self adjusting" bracket and TRW pump.  Self adjusting my a**, what a crock.

Those self adjusting units work pretty good actually.  The key is in the rubber bumper on the bottom of the main bracket.  I think Year One has those, or maybe restoration specialities.  I think they were 3 dollars
 
When I didn't have one, I would sawzall out a chunk of side wall and slip it in there.  it wirked pretty good.  But swelled like hell if you got it oil soaked. . .
