How wide of rims can be on the front with no problems
« on: April 23, 2017, 12:49:33 AM »

Hi all,  I just bought a 56 Dodge Custom Royal and just got aftermarket rims for it.  They are 7"wide and they look like they will work on the back but I think they are to wide for the front.  What is the widest rims a man can use on the front with no problems.  Can a person buy spacers and make them work.  If so what thickness of spacers would I need.  Thanks

Kind of a hard thing to know for sure, but, there are ways to verify the information by checking things out yourself. Take a stiff wire, like a coat hanger or slightly heavier and bend a loop in one end to attach to a wheel stud, then bend the wire to the inside of the rim so you have the wheel angle and tire height, the other end of the loop would be the outside outermost edge of the tire tread. Put this on the stud and you can turn the wheels left and right and rotate the hub to make sure you have clearance inside the wheel well and not hit.
With that, if the rims are new and could be returned for an offset instead of adding spacers, it will keep the tire and rim within the fender edge, which would be a concern. Stock rims were either 5 or six inches to begin with, one extra inch shouldn't be too much of an issue, 2 inches might be tight, but hope this method of checking the clearance helps.
