Add-on PS for 1955 Plymouth
« on: April 07, 2015, 08:05:49 AM »

Has anybody put aftermarket power steering on a 1955 Plymouth?  We are trying to do this for a lady with a bad back.  It was her grandmother's car and it's a daily driver for her.  Has a 260 engine we're rebuilding and trying to hook up PS for her.  Have a Chevy aftermarket conversion to try.  Thanks for any help!

Lastly, 1954-1956 are the years you are looking at for an original factory setup, imagine it would also cross over to many Dodges and possibly some Chryslers.

One of our members is a Jeep guy too.  I'll have him come on for you for that option.
The Rack system is definitely a good option.  Hardest thing would be mounting the pump.  You need a 2nd pulley off the damper, either way

I'm doing the computer work for my husband here.  We've been looking for a used PS set-up from a Plymouth or Dodge for almost a year.  He feels there isn't a good way for mounting a rack and pinion, but says the power assist sounds pretty good.  Will check back for any further remarks, and thank you very much for the suggestions!

The box itself, I just don't know what changes in shape/design are on the 55 compared to a newer box, but there has to be something that will bolt up, or a bracket welded to the frame to make it work. 1954-1956 gives you a pretty wide range of period to locate a power steering box. Should be one out there.

You know. . . i was just thinking.  Let me dig out my Holanders cross reference.  You may be able to use a Power Steering box from a 55/56 Chrysler.  That would be a bolt in.
