Been a year since we started the '64 Dodghe 440 318 Poly engine swap (exact model and year engines) and I'm 99.5 % done, but having been so long I've forgotten a few details:

Which plug wire on the dist (rear mounted on polys) goes to #1 cylinder?  From the wire lengths and firing order it looks like the front-most one (front of car) closest to the carb  on the distributor goes to the #1 cyl , but not sure.

I have a light gray wire coming  out of the main through- the-firewall harness that I labeled "to cylinder at rear of intake manifold"... no idea what I meant by this and don't see such a cylinder on this manifold... I don't if it was a condensor or what???

Do I need 2 throttle return springs, I can seem to find only one, but pics on net for 318 poly show 2, if so, where do I get one?

I take it the valve covers are on, so, roll the engine over to top dead center using the harmonic balancer mark, you can verify it is TDC with a wood dowel or screwdriver through the sparkplug hole of number one cylinder. Wherever the distributor rotor points to is number one (or 180 degrees out, not a problem (as you roll the engine over, if air is being compressed and your finger is having pressure against it, that's compression stroke, no pressure would be the exhaust stroke so the rotor would be pointing at number 6 sparkplug wire on the cap).  Now, if you don't like the location of the rotor, you can pull the distributor and re-index it where you want, but it really doesn't matter. That takes care of the timing.

A double spring is a safety, as long as the spring you have makes the carb return all the way to the idle set screw. Sometimes a single spring is a little weak, but you should be able to at least test with a single spring, tighten it up a few loops if it is weak.

What is on the other end of the wire? Is it a ground strap and the end of the head a bolt location?

Turns out the gray wire is for the oil sender... got the dist wiring... she turns over ok, but bad carb base gasket leak needs fixed now, prob just dried out from sitting.

Soak it in gas, works most times. Or do it right and replace it.
Too bad you couldn't have just written "oil sending unit", but you can blame it on someone else, right?

I wasn't sure what it was because it didn't look like any sending unit I'd ever seen, and the one on the transplanted engine was different too... no biggie, we figured it  out with help of the FSM , always the LAST thing one looks at when desperate, it seems.  The gasket will be replaced with new.
