OK, even though that many miles are on the transmission, I would swap out a selonoid pack, because if there is that much junk in there, since metal bits and fluid are going through the selonoid pack, there may be something jamming things up and not allowing them to simply engage. Might be a cheap fix until you can get a reaplcement transmission, Be sure to get a new torque converter so it isn't contaminated, too, and flush the tranny cooler.

Hadn't thought of the tranny cooler, great advice...Thanks Ed!!

I Will mention it to my brother when I talk to him next.  Were going to pull the junk tranny and put aside for now, then rebuild it in our spare time.  But He's going to grab a junkyard tranny and try and do a Re/Re this weekend.  It's a long weekend up here in BC...so he's got 3 1/2 days.

If I wasn't off work due to a muscle tear in my arm, I'd be giving him a hand.

At least they are a small transmission. Usually pretty tough, hope it goes well.

Hey sometimes you get lucky.  He had nothing to loose by tossing $10 worth of used sensors at it....heck it was worth a try.

Turned out it was in vain...but at least we know now that tossing electrical related parts at it would be useless...

Yeah, the gear ratio sync mismatch is because the old valve bodies used shuttle valves to control the fluid path to engage clutch packs, now they (supposedly) simplified it by using selonoids to open and close those passages, to which some are engaging and some aren't (the mismatch between the sensors), stuck open or closed based on the metal you found. Next thing would be to pull the selonoid pack and clean out the little filter screens. I think they even have a service kits to clean and replace the screens and O-rings for such service, someone over on another site had a whole topic and pictures of doing it, which wasn't that difficult. My only concern is the contaminants in the fluid and getting everything cleaned out may be needed, especially the cooler and lines, but the filter itself may have done its job and kept the big stuff out the way it is supposed to.

My brother picked up a used tranny out of the wreckers for under $100.
Out of a 06 Neon, with 68K km's.  Thing looked almost new, and the
filter and pan were pristine!!  Swapped it in and works like a charm!
Then the alternator would not charge.  We worked on that for a couple
days and finally had to run a new wire from the stud on the alternator
to the battery.  Seems there is a fusible link hidden somewhere in that
heavy wiring circuit, and it is toast.  So for now this will do the job.

Sounds good. Gonna tear the old one apart and see what happened, just for the mechanic fun of the whole thing?

He'd like to rebuild it, so if the used one fails...he's got a new one ready to go.
