Be ye all aware that the Northstar is fairly notorious for "issues".  Like oil leaks, oil burning, head gasket and head problems (due to corroding head bolts). These were common in Northstar engines, particularly over the 100K mile mark. My son's best friend just got rid of an '02 STS with 130k that had most of these problems, plus a cracked ignition module, so he got a Saturn wagon which is far more reliable. Since my son had done all the work on this car for the last year or so, he was happy to see it go away! Northstar was  typical of GM under-development before releasing the product to the public.  Just a word to the wise.

I knew they had problems with the early ones from the late '80s until @ '92.  Who was the genius that decided the stater should be mounted under the intake manifold???  What???  But I had heard the motor was decent after '92.  There are always exceptions.

Even so, I did ask Jim and Ella what problems they've had with the motor.  They said none.  ...OK.

I once asked a man what problems he'd had with his transmission - he had a '91 New Yorker with that terrible electronic transmission Mopar introduced in '88.  He said none, and the car had 69,000 miles.  He told me he was giving the car to his Nephew.

When I performed the man's funeral two years later the Nephew, whose wedding I had performed, came and said, "Do you remember when you asked my Uncle about the transmission in his car?  Well, it stopped working two weeks after you asked."

HA!!!  True story!

I'm told if coolant is changed religiously - intentional word choice ;-) - and all maintenance on schedule, they can go a long time... this car sounds like it has, so wouldn't want to pre-judge it's longevity, but evidently later cars did have some of the same issues, to wit my son's friends '02... these new high tech engines won't take abuse & neglect the way our old cast-iron wonders will.

BTW just a few hours ago I was riding back with my son and that same friend from the gun range, where we made a lot of noise and blew up clays with various Remington shotguns (made an hour from here) and SKS & Mosin Nagant commie rifles, when he said his girlfriend, who was using that Caddy, even though it hardly runs (she'a a grad student so, of course, poor) , managed to hit a horse with it yesterday. Apparently the horse was ok, got  up and ran off, and the Caddy, slightly bent in front, limped home as lamely as it was running before the accident. He said they're going to scrap it.

Oh wow!  I am assuming she is OK?
Does she want another Caddy?

Would LOVE to shoot that Mosin-Nagant!
