57 Plymouth Belvedere...The type of E-brake on output of transmission. Has anyone ever had a warped drum turned? I went all over town today and all the shops turned me down...said it was either too small and they couldn't get their cutting tool in there or the splined hole in the center will cause mounting problems in their lathe and they couldn't get it to run true. Do I have to get a new (used) one?



 
It's ridiculous trying to get anything fixed on this car...

Wouldn't happen to have a spare splined yoke by any chance? If so, cut the spline off, fix a bushing and a large bolt through the center and snug it down to keep from slipping (or tack weld the bolt going through on one end, cut some threads off the lathe gripping side to hold it sturdy). I've had to do this for oddities before.

Gee  The guy I know who could turn that has closed down.  Has to be really out for you to have to go through all this.  Under the circumstances, find another.
 
Bob, I'm just going to cut this CV of the shaft and send the assembly.

I called two local machine shops and left messages...will have to wait till after Christmas I'm sure. Before you go cutting anything off Steve let me see what I hear back from them. Even with the right chunk of splined shaft I 'd still have to find someone that has a small lathe that can get in there with a cutting tool. So there's no guarantee that will work. Thank you for wanting to help though. I appreciate it. There's Rochester clutch and brake too here in the city. They specialize in old cars. And if not I can always look for a new drum too.  I've never had issues like this with my C-bodies...finding parts or getting parts reworked. Noone seems to  know what to do with these Fin cars or their parts. Has anyone else ever noticed this?

Do you have a pic of the E-brake assembly?  Is it similar to the one on my 48 Desoto off the back of the tranny?

Thanks again Steve for your offer. If I find someone that can get in there with a cutting tool but needs a way of mounting it you'll be the go to guy.
 
If this gets to be a pain in the neck I'll switch gears and look for a new (non-warped) drum.

Ahhh I see.  Funny that you can't find a machinist who can turn that for you.  I found a guy here locally, through an old neighbor of mine, who is a journey man machinists.  He has all the equipment needed to do pretty much any project I've thrown at him.  Sometimes takes him a while to get to it...since he does the little cash jobs when he's not too busy...and he's ALWAYS busy...:)

Maybe ask around and see if you can find a talented machinist who works out of his garage/shop...they tend to be more willing to try and tackle the odd ball stuff.

Well...no one called me back. I think these guys have enough work so...I called the brake specialist here in Rochester...Rochester Clutch and Brake and he said he can turn that e-brake drum for me....no problem. So I should be good to go. I won't need that output shaft Steve. Thank you for that offer to cut it off the trans. and send it to me. You never cease to amaze me with your willingness to help me out.  I do appreciate it. Just for your guys info...Rochester Clutch and Brake does all kind of specialty work on classic cars...so keep them in mind. Sam told me he is the supplier for Andy Bernbaum for e-brake, brake shoes, clutches...All that kind of stuff and he will sell to little old you and me. So you can eliminate the middle man if you know what I mean.

I would have sent you the whole shaft.  It's out of the car. . .  I'm just sitting on it.

ForwardLook drums off, without that special puller everyone says is an

Got it done on Monday Brian...mentioned it in my other (driveshaft) thread. It wasn't cheap but it's done and I watched him do it. $40.00 which I believe is about $20 too much. I think it was done right though. It wasn't too far out of round. He measured about .006-008" so I'm not sure its going to make any difference.

You're welcome Roger...I think it was Steve...here that said some of the old timers use to loosen the rear lugnuts just a little bit and then drive the car around the yard until the drums popped loose? Was that you Steve? Never tried this though so be carfeul if you decide to. Please chime in here Steve...
