Yeah.  I am a WW2 sorta buff.  Unfortunately allot of what I learned disappeared with the strokes.  But the opportunity to crawl through a B17 was more than I could resist.  And getting momentarily stuck in the bomb bay was classic

Interesting, the motors on both planes were the same, R-1800s, yet they sound different due to different super-charging.  That was one of the reasons why the 24 flew faster than the 17, yet it could not fly at the same altitude as it.
Fun stuff Steve!!!

I noticed the exhaust on the B17 was at least 25% larger and more direct.  The B24 had some piping running under the cowl discharging behind the wing.  The 17 vented fore the wing

If my Dad were still alive I could get an "expert" description of each.  He was a specialist on those motors as well as other Radials.  His favorite was the 4360 Wasp Major.  I always liked looking at planes with him because if prompted he would talk for a long while on topics like supercharging, etc.
He always said planes lost their glory when they went to jet motors.

His favorite time on a flight line was a night, when you could see the flames coming out of the exhaust while the motors were under full take-off power.  I have seen it a few times and I agree.
In the scenes of "Tora, Tora, Tora" when the Japanese planes are taking off from the Carriers it is still early dawn, and the exhaust flames can be seen.  It's cool footage!
