Are they worth saving?
« on: February 07, 2012, 03:10:22 PM »

I finally got the manifolds off.  The headers went in ok and I currently don't have any clearance issues so I'm a happy camper.  However I have a question.  Are these manifolds worth saving?  How about the factory head pipes?  The manifolds are cracked the passenger is bad enough to have a hole, and the crack runs into the flange.  The head pipes are real bad as well but I think perhaps they might have some value as a template to someone actually doing a real restoration.  Ideas, opinions?

I have a pass. side HP manifold that was cracked pretty bad.  I tried using some special "Cast Iron" welding rods on it...but it just made things worse.    The flanges look fine so far as I'm concerned...but then I don't use gaskets...thin coat of RTV silicon and I've never had a leak since.

They are high performance Ramhorns and I personally think they are worth saving, there are guys that can use the cast iron welding rods correctly, might be worth saving.

The 2806900 casting did have flaws where they cracked--just like yours.
It can be repaired provided the guy know what he is doing.
The right side interchanges with B and E cars and is worth saving
The lefty is C only and is worth its weight in scrap to others outside the C body genre.

I agree  the headpipes shhould be saved since they are no longer available and can be used as a template for others.
Keep in mind they are 440 only and do not work with the 383.

Yes both are cracked.  The passenger side has an open hole and is cracked down in to the flange, it's hard to see in this photo but it's there.

I would at least see if someone can weld them. There is a special rod for it, some of the old timer stick welders know how to do it. These manifolds are really good breathers, as good as any header on the street, might fall a little short on the strip with a well built motor, but hey, they do look nicer than the log manifolds. Get them porcelain coated afterwards and you would never know they were cracked, keep them a little cooler. I would say running a little lean did it over time.

I would sell them for what you can get and let someone else worry about it

What, and leave beautiful Owings Mills??!

I liked Central MD many years ago, like 40,  and Carroll Co wasn't
too ruined when I left MD in '98, but I could never move back... been
too spoiled by rural VT and upstate NY.

Northwest CT is the best part. Lime Rock!

Yeah well all the family is up there and the wife wants the squirt to grow up around family so....
As far as beautiful OM MD,  let's just say I won't miss much.   That goes for the Ghetto Buzzard (Balmer PD chopper) that seems to be flying more and more around here in the 3 years since we moved in to the state.  The locals say it's all gone down hill since Moving Thuggs Around (MTA) put in a light rail stop out here.

Yeah the light rail and 795 ruined Curl Cownty... though it is handy if
you want to do downtown Bawlamer.  It was a nice area in the
'50/60/70s when I was growing up in Towson, then in Westminster, but
dang has it changed!!  My best friend still lives in
Hampsted/Manchester so we still get down there, the last time was in
November... looks worse every time, but I sure do miss the crabs and
the Natty Boh!! I'd say the Colts too, but they ceased to exist many
years ago, and now I got the GIANTS! Yeah!!!
