57 Dodge Amp Guage Hook Up
« on: February 06, 2012, 08:34:05 AM »

I am trying to hook up the original Amp Guage in my 57 Dodge custom Royale.  The previous owner hooked up an aftermarket gauge so that the alternator registered.  I put the original generator back on the car and I am now trying to hook up the gauge.  There are no bolts on the back of the gauge, just a hoop.  is this an inductive system if so how do I get it to work?

Is there any way you can show a picture? I would honestly think the power would go to the hoop and the body of the gauge would be the ground. I just don't know for sure if this is a positive or negative ground vehicle, but as long as the gauge works, it will just read backwards if wired backwards, so no damage would be done. Just make sure whatever wire is attached is insulated from the rest of the case. I say this because the later two post amp gauges have a thin piece of phenolic material, which over time decays and breaks apart and shorts, which I don't want to happen to yours.

Is the gauge or dash cluster out of the car? You can use a battery charger to do a low voltage test of the proper wiring direction.

got the problem with the amp solved.  It was inductive.  Ran the insulated wire thru the hoop in the back and it worked.
