They were either a 1.6 or a 1.8 Mitsu engine if not mistaken. They did get 32-35mpg without a problem, and they moved pretty good compared to a Pinto or Vega in the day.

70s Dodge Colts were totally Mitsubishi-made cars, as was the Plymouth Arrow, and the engines were
pretty good but the car overall was a real tin can, thin steel and
cheesy-flimsy. A friend had one... it ran real good, but they rusted
out in about 3 days.

Plymouth also had the Cricket, a UK made car by Rootes, which was a
subsidiary of Chrysler in those days, as was Simca-France...  the
Cricket was a real POS if ever there was one.  Amazingly, I saw a
near mint rust free 30,000 original mi Cricket in the local U-Pull It
'yard about a month ago... I did a major double-take, as I  hadn't
seen one in at least 30 years... most were already in a 'yard by the
time they were 3 years old. A real heap 'o krap. Plymouth caught on and
put their name on the Colt Hatchback forthwith.  Almost none of the Colts/Arrows/Crickets have survived.

There is just about nothing build during the mid 70s thru the early 80s that was cheap that lasted. There may be one parked outside a house a few blocks from me still.

Ya, Jap cars of that era had great mechanicals but rusted at the drop
of a hat, and God help you if you got in an accident...it's hard to
believe those cars made the Japanese reputation, but they did, thanks
to really garbage cars like Vega, Pinto, Aspens, and similar bogus
attempts by US car makers after the '70s gas shocks to make a decent
small car that could get good gas mileage... they shot themselves in
the foot, with repercussions that have lasted to this very day. People
then were stupid and didn't realize that big V8 US cars were so
bulletproof that in the long run they cost less to run, even if they
sucked fuel, which was still dirt cheap anyway, and repairs to those
Furys/Impalas/Galaxies up through the early-mid '70s were almost
nil...  those cars the result of 40 years of refinement, full
frame rwd V8s that were built like the Brooklyn Bridge and parts
were dirt cheap, on the rare occasion that they actually needed any.
The kind of car I grew up with, learned to drive on, and still prefer
over any other.
