Most of the time I should be able to sell power back to the utility company

Well, that's good. $10K is a reasonable cost for the amount you seem to be able to make with your system, I on the other hand have $40 a month electric bills and it would take forever to pay off. This is the whole thing about going green. It is initially expensive, is fine for one household, is not efficient enough for large grids of houses and businesses, and if worse comes to worse, you could throw a dozen batteries into the trunk of the car and go electric city driving vehicle to save even more (down the road, or until the next election cycle).

That's cool... I'd like to do that but won't be in this house long enough (2-5 yrs max) to get a payoff. If nothing else it's nice to be quasi-independent of the grid. You can still get some tax credits I believe?

Try and keep those wind generators away from your bedroom. They are noisy when the wind is strong and can keep you awake if you like to sleep with the window open like i do.

I get a 30% tax credit from the government and I will be elegable for a State rebate of up to $3750.  That would pay 2/3 of the cost

As much as I want to say the Libs finally got to ya.... the way the cost of fuel and electricity is I bet you will see lots of people going this way soon...

I'm thinking about a cottage wind generator to reduce my need for outside electricity... the price up here is getting insane..

What does energy saving have to do with politics?? That is, other than
the fact that because of politics RayGun cut out all the forward
thinking energy research funding and tax credits started by Carter and
Sec of Energy James Schlesinger back in the '70s (that I guess SOME
people aren't Old Enough to rememeber), setting us back at least 20
years so that now Europeans, Japanese and even the Chinese lead us in
many of the Energy technology areas... they even cut out all the Energy
units out of Science courses I used to teach, along with the Metric
System units in elem and middle schools... really really STUPID.

It just plain makes sense to use less energy, all businesses realize
this, and in 10 years it will look absolutely brilliant when energy
prices triple.   We'd like to build a super-efficient house to
retire in when we sell out in a couple years; geo-thermal heat
exchange, wind charger, photovoltaic thin film collectors and
super-insulated design... free heat and A/C,  and generate enough
power to sell back to the grid. The VT summer house is only 300 ft from
Lake Champlain and consequently gets a lot off-shore convection wind
year round, so wind generators make a lot of sense up there too.

Correct!  Cutting all the funding and tax credits for Energy
Research in the early 80s was one of the dumbest, most short sighted, idiotic
things ever done by a politician, and we are all suffering now because
of it. Hello to $5 gasoline.

It's smart to do what Steve's doing... and getting some fry oil and
making BioDiesel for the Ram would pretty smart too - a friend here has
been doing that for 4 years now. It's pretty easy to do, and he gets
free oil from a sub shop (most restaurants pay to have it removed!),
and now it costs him all of $1 a gallon to run his GMC Top-Kick diesel
rollback!  He's saving thousands a year.

The dems not letting you guys drill is the reason for $5.00 gasoline.. You guys have enough for $1.00 gasoline.. the left just won't let them drill

Wrong. All the easy stuff has been gotten...do your homework, try
starting with factcheck.org and the supposed North Dakota Bakken oil
field
"bonanza". Only about 30% of oil used in the US is produced
domestically and it has declined for a long time. Why do you think we
have all these wars anyway?? Furthermore Obama opened up the whole east
coast to off-shore drilling to much chagrin from some in his party.
Let's get this thread back to Steve's project, no amount of facts will
convince science doubters.

Steve do you have links to the wind turbines? I'd be interested to see them.

I thought about that.  I live in a neighborhood where I can hear my next door neighbor crapping.

so that's where the wind will be coming from!

now, lets reminisce a little......
