LA vs B/RB air cleaner size. Same or different?
« on: January 30, 2011, 03:55:48 PM »

I'm thinking of buying a dual-snorkel air cleaner for my car once I "adios" the leanburn since there'll be a gaping hole in its side once the computer-box is gone.  I saw this dual snorkel air cleaner on eBay and I'm wondering if it'll fit my engine.  I have a '79 360 w/ the 4v Thermoquad carb:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Dodge-Mopar-Dual-Snorkel-Air-Cleaner-383-440-/200569765686?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2eb2e3bf36

It LOOKS like it's the right model.  The air intake on mine is oval and so are the intakes on this one.  Mine has a little "dimple" in the front of the housing for the heater hose to rest in and so does this.  I'm assuming since it's a dual snorkel that this went on a 4 bbl carb (thermoquad) engine, which is what mine has.  But the lister says this is from a 440 and mine's a 360.

So my question is - will this air cleaner fit on top of my engine or is it too big?  Did Chrysler use different diameter air cleaners for their B/RB engines than they did on the 360 LA engine?

I took two air cleaners and made a dual cleaner..

It is way cheaper to find two singles.. drill out the factory spot welds on the one snorkel. Lay it out the way you like it.. trace it then cut out the hole.

I welded mine in from the inside so it wasn't noticed from the outside.

Very few people know that mine isn't original. I ran the same speed at the track with my dual snorkel ( with the air filter removed) as I did with no air breather on at all..

To me that says it flows great.. and you will have both tubes the same length

I can take a pic if you want to see it.

I don't think there is a difference as long as the hole is the same size.. ie: 4 barrel or 2 barrel

As long as it fits the top of the carb you are fine, if it is too large or small, there are actually adapters to make it fit.

It may not be correct for yor car,and it is for a big block 73-74 car.
But it will work fine on your car.
Just route the extra snorkel vacuum line so it will open up under WOT for more air.

They will fit on your car if it's runing the TQ or other 4bbl carb.  I had a '70 Dual Quad on my '79 Cordoba 360 with TQ - fit great!

Sounds simple enough - oh wait.....I've never welded anything, ever.    But I can picture it easily enough in my head.

And, yes, I'd love to see some pics (inside and outside) of it.

I'll take some pics tonight...

The nice thing is that you can put the snorkels in the direction that clears things.. When you buy one you get whatever the factory did.

I also removed the vacuum flaps on mine and covered the holes with fiberglass. I don't drive mine in the cold anyways..

I did a search and found Nick's Garage which has a pictoral database of Mopar air cleaners   (it's a really cool site, BTW).  According to him, that air cleaner looks like it's from a '74-and-up big-block:

[buncha idiotic rambling on my part deleted]

Never-mind.  I checked my FSM and parts catalog and figured it out.  There's a combo of throttle AND temp to activate the trap door diaphragms on the dual snorkel air cleaner:  Temp for the main snorkle, throttle for the secondary w/ a throttle override for the main.

You addressed this in the "projects" thread, so I'll answer it here.

I agree.  That's why I'm planing to build a factory-looking cold-air intake like the one used in the Warlock/Lil Red Express:

There's a guy who's done something that's probably more effective:

...but, personally, I'm not a fan of the way it looks.

Take a look at these

I couldn't do the dual on Polaraco.  My computer is over in front of the battery on the right.  So I went woth 4".  The intake on our engines is 420 CFM.  A single 4" is good for 850.  You can look through all the Spectra stuff on there, those kits are less than $200.  By the time I got through, mine was close to $350.  But I am prepping for a turbo setup

Original Mopar Dual Snorkle air cleaners are not rare.  They are going up in price but they can be found and any Mopar Show where there's a swap meet.  The one for sale on ebay is a later '70s, but in my opinion is ugly.  I'd go for an early '70s one where the snorkels are the same length.  Since they were not used on your car "factory correct" is not really an issue - agian, in my opinion.

I sold this '71 AC a few years back to Chris on this site.  I think it's the one I used on my Cordoba.

They are available.

I agree that the symmetrical snorkels look better, but I don't think
that kind of air cleaner will work on my car unless I re-route some of the
plumbing - and even then I'm not so sure.  Take a look at the heater hose and A/C compressor in my engine bay:

The heater hose behind the A/C compressor needs that "dimple" to nest in - which rules out early '70s air cleaners.  Even if I routed the hose below the compressor, I think the compressor's rear extends far enough back that a non-dimpled cleaner would interfere with it.  I don't want to spend $150+ to find out if I'm right or wrong.  I'll go with what I know works.

....And while we're on the subject of aesthetics, Snotty, even though I like the symmetry of that air cleaner you showed me, I never liked the square-mouthed snorkels.    I dunno why....there's something inelegant about them.  I much prefer the look of the oval-mouthed inlets.

Thank you, ladies and gentlemen, that concludes today's broadcast of "What not to Drive" a.k.a. "Queer Eye(ver) for the Straight Driver"

You can drop those hoses.. . .Or you can do what I did and go single side but on the left!
