1966 Fury III ?s help
« on: December 31, 2010, 05:24:41 PM »

Think I might get a 66 Fury III with a 440 please check it out

Engine looks good! full length headers, ps,pb, MSD ignition w/goldbox, dual line holley carb, new cross flow alum radiator, dual exhaust    can that carb be changed for a non duel line like a 700?

Will it get better then 10mpg or not?

Welcome

Part of it is driving habits.  Don't take me wrong, I find muself punching mine frequently too.

Smaller primaries on the carb, a thermoquad is a good choice for that.  Or an Edelbrock avenger.  You want to jet it down until it almost burbs.  You can open up the secondaries if you are looking for competition.

You want a wide cam with high lift and short duration.  Won't do anything for the horsepower, but you'll have a real torque monster on your hands.

Are the heads ported?  There is a thread in Engine tech about porting for street.  It's a small block, but it applies to all blocks.  That particular engine is fuel injected, but that doesn't matter.

You want to focuse on making torque, not Horsepower to get good MPG.  Read that thread from end to end and you'll see what's going on.  The engine isn't broken in yet, but it is getting 18 around town.  I'm gessting around 24 on a 360, Highway, and I still have a few more things to do.  I'm building a 413 to do the same thing.

My personal feeling about any Holly carb is pretty low.  Their dual feeds seem to be a bit better, but they are not MPG carbs.  Make sure the Dizzy is curved too.
