Power steering fluid leak on 70 300
« on: December 14, 2010, 04:42:38 PM »

All the power steering fluid leaked out of my reservoir/pump.   Looks like it's coming out the bottom.   Is there a gasket under there that disintegrates or leaks?   Sounds like a job for Snotty, but he still hasn't installed the 7 blade fan.   Boy, he's way behind on finishing  all my projects.

Hey Steve
Is that the round pump?  Oe one with a goose neck on it?

It's probably the O-Ring on the reservoir.  If the pump was drained to the bottom.  It happens when you don't use them much.  Replacement rings and shaft seals are readily availble.

Power steering fluid is mineral oil.  But you can add a small amount of brake fluid to swell the seals a bit.  Chances are, the steering box is leaking too, unless it's rebuilt already.

You can use shrimp oil too.  There is a local supplier in Bakersfield too.  LOL

yeah it's the round pump, and it all leaked out.  You may be right the steering box may be leaking too.   At least the leak stopped when all the fluid was gone.   hahaha.    The plate of shrimp was big until Snotty made 3 passes on it.

Then it's the reservoir gasket.  I would fill it and add an aounce or so of brake fluid.  Run the car around a few days.  I know you don't like too, but it needs to be done.  That will be a temporary fix until you can get 20 pounds of shrimp and a gallon of sauce.
