possibly the cable is binding.  Or it's not the cable, it's the trans itself.

These are tough to diagnose.  The cable usually kinks behind the shifter on the dash.

Has there been any other indications of trouble leading up to this?

How's your fluid level?  If it's low sometimes your transmission will not ingage.  Might be worth checking....

Polaraco's 59 Saratoga needed a quart of ATF for the trans to engage back before it was hit by that tractor-trailer in my yard....leaked out of the dipstick o-ring over time I guess....

Thanks. Fluid level is fine.  No indications. I haven't pulled the shifter control yet (cold outside) but I will try that . I appreciate the help!

Please forgive my potential insult: did you check the level while the motor was running?

Yeah that's where my 58 Belvedere leaked from the O-ring on the shifter cable where it inserts into the transmission.   There's a place in MI that makes replacement cables.

I know what it is. . .   Bob, it's the same car.

It's probably out of adjustment and the cable needs lube.  That's the one leaburn put some RTV on for me and he messed with the adjustment.  There's nothing wrong with the trans. . .   It's the owner who is really out of adjustment.  I just found out who this guy is and he is NOT WELCOME HERE
