I'm just curious since you guys are in California... How the heck did the Hemi and 440 +6 make it through California emissions..  Was there a bunch of different stuff put on them in California?

No.  The only difference was the NOx system that was added to cars in California in '71, and a fully-closed fuel system in '70.  The "Vapor Saver" tank that was on all cars in '71 was mandadted on Cal. cars in '70.  If you have a Factory Service Manual from '70 or '71 it is described in the Cleaner Air System - section 9a.

It would not be until later in the '70s that CA would no longer allow certain motors.  For instance, any given Pontiac Trans Am was supposed to be a 4-speed as standard.  But in CA a 4-speed was not allowed because it came with the 400 in the late '70s.  So, a CA TA came with the Olds 403 and an automatic.  It made no sence but that was the way it was.

Even in the '80s this crap went on.  I wanted a 4-speed when I bought my RamCharger new in '87.  I wanted the 318 but that HAD to be an automatic in CA, even though I could get one with a 4-speed in Nevada!  But, by law I could not buy one there and register it here.  So, I got a 360 with my 4-speed.

WOW... the wackos have been at work there for over 40 years it seems..

I remember reading about the Trans Am engine thing... imagine how many people saw Smokey and the Bandit in California then found out they could order the same car from the dealership....
