Bought another old Plymouth
« on: October 17, 2010, 07:30:51 AM »

Bought another old Plymouth. It was on Ebay. Drug it home yesterday. This on is actually big enough for the whole Fam Damily!

A 1974 Plymouth Voyager Sport 1 ton. 360 4bbl, upscale trim, Alpine white with a B-7 Blue stripe. The PO stored the three rear bench seats in a shed since new. They're MINT! Fuel system is full of gunk. Tanks (yes, it has two) were bone dry until the seller put gas in it to start it. Then I cam along and drove it down a bumpy road. AAA ended up bringing it home for me.

It seems to have two vin tags? One is metal and riveted on, the other is one of those sticker things.

Der Vinder stickernen!

Today it gets a new fuel filter and the engine gets degreased.

It is normal on the truck and van lines to see two tags.
If the van is riding on the old style 16.5 split rims and tires, swap them out for modern 16" wheels and cheaper radial tires.
They dont call the split rims "widow makers" for nothing and the 16.5 tires are getting tougher to find.

It's got the 16.5's but they're not split. Also got a set of Ford 16" 8 lug rims thrown in. I think I'll use those. Your right, 16.5's are more expensive!

What size 16.5?? i can convert the size for you.
IIRC, LT2457516 or 2358516 should work.
The Phord rims will bolt right on.Not sure of the hubcaps will go on.Some of the older ones had clips welded on the rims to keep them on.

Stock (and what's on the front now, there's a pair of 16" Phords on the back) is 8.75-16.5 load range E. What's that convert to in a 16"? Tire height is bang on but I'd like a little wider....The stock Ford Wheels I have are 16X6. The hubcaps fit just fine. Not sure what the Phord wheels have on them but they're to tall.

The 6 inch rims limit you from going wider.
Luckily the bolt pattern has not changed in years and the aftermarket has tons of rims available in 7-8- and 9 inches wide and you can put a 2657016 tire in them.
The best and most popular size to install on your 16X6 rims is the LT2457516  Load range E which has an outer diameter of 30.5.
The last generation of B2500/3500 series vans used this size so clearance should not be an issue.

that's what the desert sun does to el-cheapo paint! It used to be the same color as the lift cylinder. I guess che po the painter put to much lead in that batch and not enough in the other when he painted it.

Just went and measured things...245/75R16's (what's on my '03 GMC) are to big! They won't clear the fenders. about an inch to tall.

I used the original Polyglass wideoval 8.75-16.5 spare from the Plymouth, set it beside the 245/75R16 on the GMC and there's a big difference.
