60 Rear end swap
« on: September 28, 2010, 03:28:00 AM »

So my 60 Fury, Uckin-Fugly has a 3:64 rear according to the manual. It started it's life as a 3 speed on the column. I'd like to put a stock 2:76 in to bring down the highway revs.
A Mopar salvage guy near Carlisle PA. has 2 donors; a 60 2 door Belvedere, and a 4 door Savoy, both with 361-torqueflite. The book says these should both be 2:76 rears. Is there any way to tell from the build sheet or markings on the rear if they actually are 2:76?

Thanks Steve the Neophite

There should be a little oblong tag attached to the rear that will tell the ratio.  If it has a round tag and a oblong, it's a sure grip.  The oblong tag will tell you the ratio.

My money is on the Sedan being a 276.  But I thought you were going for the rear in that Desoto parts car.

Haven't had anyone to committ to taking it apart. The seller offered for 4-500. I told him that's kinda high. Maybe stockpiling parts isn't the best idea. The only thing I really need is a smaller rear.(Don't we all...)

I said I'd take care of it.  Pete and I were going to do it.  But it's got to be an in and out

Are you talking about swapping the entire rear or just the third member?  If the latter you can find those in that ratio in lots of places for under $200.00.

Can I get the name/number of that yard?
