440 valve cover gaskets.

I'm going to change the valve cover gaskets in my 68 chrysler 300. It has a 440. My ? is if the studs at each end of the valve covers turn out will I get coolant all over?  I got one off without the stud coming out. I dont want coolant everywhere. I would think the studs would bottom out.

Yes I was told that if the studs come out with the nut it will spit coolant unless he was giving me a line.

Not a line--just a misunderstanding.
No coolant will come out from the valve cover bolt holes/studs.
Some Exhaust manifold studs DO go into the water jackets of the heads and when the stud comes out coolant comes out.
Simple.

In simple terms, there is no coolant behind the valve cover studs.
 
The place to worry is in the front of the engine.  Accessories like Power steering and some alternators have water behind the mounting bolts.  But even then, most of the wet bolts will be through the timing chain cover.

Yes, and some times they will turn the stud out on older motors.  This is not a problem, just tighten them back down when you put the covers back on.


 
All of them will turn out; you've just has a few do it.
 
As someone said, if this were to happen on the exhaust manifold you would get coolant from the outer stud holes.
 
Be sure to clean off all of the old material form the head and the covers before you put the new ones back on.  A small amount of black silicone helps to seal them.  Don't over-tighten the bolts.

Valve cover bolt holes do NOT go into the water jacket. The front and rear exhaust manifold bolts/studs do go into the water jackets, no accessory attachments on the front of the engine  enters the water jacket, and the water pump bolts go into the water jacket on the front of the engine, no timing cover bolts do.  If the valve covers are stamped steel, to prevent/stop leaks from overtightening over time, if you run a straight edge over the bolt holes, chances are good you will find they are not the same height as the rest of the rails, so take a hammer to them, that way when the bolts/nuts are tightened, it will clamp a larger flat area.dana442010-09-06 00:12:18

  I'm thinking small block.  I meant to say the water pump housing.
 
And I hate to tell you, if the car has A/C, there are bolts on the front which go into the water jacket.

Those bolts going into the water jacket are attached to the outside of the water pump which attach the water pump to the block which have bolts that go into the water jacket, so technically you are correct, and if the AC wasn't on the engine, those bolts would still run into the water jacket because they hold the water pump itself.
