getting "pinched"
« on: July 31, 2010, 08:28:42 PM »

My Dad would tell me "Don't get pinched" Or say stuff like"slow down, your gonna get "pinched!"
Where does this come from? What is the story behind "Getting pinched" when it comes to the police and/or breaking the law?
I have "Googled" this and "Binged" it but I got no answers.
My son and I were talking about this and I could not tell him how it started or where it comes from. I understand what it means, but how did it get started?

Help me out here!! Thanks guys!!!

That is a pretty old expression that my Grandparents used (and also "getting knicked") It probably came from the prohibition era.  It sounds like something I've heard in old Humphrey Bogart or Edward G. Robinson gangster movies.

Arlen, I'm pretty sure has to do with the handcuffs locking down on ya. It's also a slang term variety of caught, so like say you get your fingers stuck (caught) in something that snaps down on you hard enough lets say to get on of those blood blisters, that was a pinch. You get caught by the man in blue and he throws the bracelets on ya and your pinched as well.

Yes, I just recalled a scene from "Band of Brothers."  Some Brit makes a comment about "pinching" his lugar.
