Doug begged for my help so I caved and spent 12 hours at his place.
Where you saw the motor sitting in front of the truck is where it landed. He has no garage and wanted the motor inside the engine bay out of the weather.
Worst part is over now.Doug can finish hooking thing back up and eventually turn the key for the first time.

Got it pointing at #1.
At TDC,it actually points to the front of the engine almost paralell to the centerline of the cam.

You need to go left one tooth.  I know it's a pain, but the V advance could be hitting the firewall

The rebuild was done after diagnosing a thrust bearing wore out and the crank was walking out under load and spewed oil from the rear main seal.

Thrust bearing wear is another problem with modern oils without ZDDP - I had a 2005 PT Cruiser that did the same thing - except it was the front seal that kept popping out and gushing oil.

It's also a good indication of a bad torque converter

I'm hearing to many horror stories about these ZDDP-less oils...

We  installed the motor with the dizzy already in place.
Actually,it is not against the firewall. The vacuum advance is between 8 and 9 o'clock with room to spare to set the timing.
The rotor is at cylinder #1 terminal at the distributor cap and crank is at TDC.
Doug was smart enough he marked the plug wires prior to tearing down the motor and everything is in line.
kEEP IN MIND THERE IS A COMP CAMS 268H in there--not a factory cam.
I will move it back a tooth, but I may have to shift the plug wires back by one.
I am going back this weekend since the truck is almost an hour away from my house.
