LA dizzy drive gear/motor install update
« on: July 23, 2010, 06:48:01 PM »

My good buddy Dougy just got his freshly rebuilt 360 home today.
He needs to know what position the oil pump shaft/dizzy gear should be in.
motor has been set to TDC.
I know that B/RB has the slot for the dizzy aligned with the center of the cam as you look at it.
Is the small block any different??
Need to know so we avoid bent pushrods/valve upon initial startup.
Thanks

Standing in front of the engine and looking to the rear over the carb, the vacuum advance should be to the left, so it can turn from the 9:30 down to the 7:00 area. As far as the rotor/oil pump goes, Mopars are a hex, so, line up the timing mark and drop the distributor into the block and where the cap crown lines up is where the number one sparkplug goes. The crown it is under is the number one, no matter what anyone says, it doesn't have to be in any specific spot physically (like a SBC for an oil hole to line up for oiling the shaft), but, because it is a hex, you can also adjust it wherever you want without fear of damage.

I may be missing something here.
Pardon my ignorance.
I am talking about the slot in the  drive gear for the dizzy.
Does it point to #1???
Does the flat slot end of t he dizzy match up to #1 on  the cap??

OK..Thanks

The gear should be pointing towards Cylinder #1 Lea.  Krauts drawing is a tad off .  The gear doesn't matter which end is pointing at the cylinder.  It's just the disty that can me out 180*POLARACO2010-07-24 13:51:05

Got it pointing at #1.
At TDC,it actually points to the front of the engine almost paralell to the centerline of the cam.

Here are some pics of yesterday's install.
Truck is from Oklahoma, and is in very nice shape.
The rebuild was done after diagnosing a thrust bearing wore out and the crank was walking out under load and spewed oil from the rear main seal.
No crate here, just the original 360 in more recycle friendly shrinkwrap.

Purdy fresh engine...
Rebuilt by Ajax Engines & Auto Centre.
http://www.yellowpages.ca/bus/Ontario/Ajax/Ajax-Engines-Auto-Centre/56173.html
Yes they are factory chrome valve covers he scarfed off an old B250 van in a local scrap metal yard.
The 4bbl intake is a 69 340 piece that has been port matched to the 360 heads.
Crank had to be cut and oversized bearings were installed.Doug went with a Comp 268 cam with 454 lift, flat top pistons, bored 30 over and square deck the block. He has 3.23 gears, duals and 28" tall rear tire.Should be a good truck for the street and highway.
