...that is the question.

Next weekend - after much too much delay - I should be starting Wanda up for the first time in a little over a year.  All the work I've done to rehab the engine and replace the myriad worn/leaky/non-functional parts will come to a head as I turn the key and pray nothing goes flying through the sheetmetal.  So here's the question:

The gas in the tank is about 14 months old.  Should I drain the tank and put in fresh gas or should I just run the car with the gas already in it?  I have never drained a tank before so I have no idea what to do or any knowledge of how easy/hard it is.  I realize in an ideal world it's important to have fresh gas in the tank......but would draining it be one of those "laws of diminishing returns" or is it actually an important thing to do after 14 months of sitting idle?

just add a bottle of gas renew or octane boost,or stabilizer and run it.
The engine is going to burn more gas anyways when fine tuning and allow all the seals and gaskets to set.

For 14 months, the only thing that could have varnished up by now is the carb. So it's not an issue in this case.  A can of tigerwhiz in the tank can't hurt either.

Stan,in his case,the carb was removed and stored so it may not have any gaz in it.
IIRC,he had the engine almost torn apart  while still in the engine bay..
I say tigerwhiz and run it..

Or a liter/quart of methyl hydrate in the tank will give it a nice clean boost.

Gas doesn't go old that easily, contrary to popular belief. A little additives helps boost it a bit, but then you have the inequality of fuel the engine would not normally be running and may not be as good on a start-up engine. Add five gallons of whatever gas is in the tank, 87/89/91 octane and go for it. You may want to drain what is in the gas line itself and change the fuel filter, but other than that, I have started cars and driven most of the half to full tank until refilling the tank, anywhere from 6months to 28months, and even ran my lawnmower on the last gallon of gas which was five years old in the tank without problems. Octane only drops between 3-4octane per year at most, less if sealed in a gas tank.

Well that's good to know.  Just one question - what's "Tigerwhiz?"  I searched for it on Google and got a rather inappropriate response.

Tigerwhiz is a generally accepted additive to gasoline that can be accepted as octane boost and stabilizer.  It can be found by name in just about any autoparts store.

 I do not recommend adding Lowenscheiss, as that could clog the fuel line...........

I'm sure Stan would agree with adding a can or two of Steele Reserve.....to your tank, not the car's.
