I quit..uhh hold on $$$
« on: April 30, 2010, 07:44:39 PM »

After almost 5 months to the day working at the local GM dealership,I am moving on.
I never worked in a dealership Service Dept. before and..boy..it was an eye opener.
First of all,the people I worked with are great. The mechanics are very skilled and easy to get along with.
This is not a personal attack to those who are used to working in the dealership atmosphere.I respect the people there since they have to make a living, too.
The problem I had with the service system is the design of the operation, and how I got paid.
It's dog eat dog.
I have to compete against three established service consultants to build clientel.
The more labour I sell,and after a set guidline,I make a commision.
They may smile at you but they are after the same nickle you are chasing.
I am a go getter and I can sell.
They see me as a threat to their sales.
But it will take years to earn a decent wage.
Every paycheque is up and down,so it is hard to balance the books at home.
There has been a heavy undertone on the floor, and lots of back stabbing, and games being played since they know how to "work the system" in their favor.
Greed sets in,and large volumes of people being served at once results in customers being overlooked, cars not getting done, and people getting pissed off.
Communication--or lack of it is also a problem.

I cannot work like that.
The longer I stayed there, the more I hated being there.
I quit.
Luckily,my old shop wants me back and I am going back after next week.
I never realized how big of a void  I left there.
They really missed me--and so do the customers.
After all I was there ten years.
I am glad to go back to my comfort zone where I can take care of my customers, get a salary, and know I earned an honest pay.

Maybe now I can be myself again, and get back to working on the BoaB.

Good for you, Lea.  I applaud your decision.  Chasing happiness over wealth is priceless in itself.

PS: Don't ever regret having tried the new job.  It was an education to improve yourself.  Not a mistake.

Without you saying anything, I could tell you were not happy the last several times we spoke.  And I didn't even tease you about the GM thing.  I don't know if you noticed that.

As I said in my email, Good to see you become human again.

Stan,I did take a few courses there and indeed I learned a few things I can apply at my old shop.
Others do agree that at least I tried it.
Steve, thanks.I did feel like a monster or a machine being pushed.
I did not feel sincere dealing with customers, and that really bothered me.
That just was plain wrong and went against my beliefs as a service advisor.

Congratulations  Lea, sounds like you did the right thing!
...  I've always felt the whole dealership setup was rigged
against the customer from the sale to service. We have a Nissan dealer
here that pays sales persons and service advisors on salary and they
are much better to deal with.

Hope that reduced stress will manifest itself in increased BOAB productivity... good on ya!

I dont know how everybody will react, but here it goes.

Once  the "word" got around that I was leaving,a few staff members at the dealership proceeded to the boss' office and give him crap for not doing anything to keep me.
I was very surprised when I found this out since I have been there only a short time.
Mostly the mechanics and a couple office staff, and a couple salespeople.

So,my boss asked me what the old place offered.
The dealership sweetened the deal and did not want me to leave.
It was a take it or get lost deal.
I could not say no to what they offered.
Let's just say both cars have full tanks of gas, bills are paid, and I will not starve when the paycheques roll in.
The sad part is I pretty much burned my bridge with my old work.
From the beginning of this adventure last year,I wanted a change where I could make more money.
Sure,it may be dog eat dog again here  next week, but I can smile to myself without the worries I had last week.
Every job has its problems, and I used my situation to my advantage.A bidding war kinda started and my old place could not beat the dealership deal.
I barked, and they threw me a bone and bit into it.
Dog eat dog.
I will tough it out and give the place more time.
I am a lot more happier today than I was Friday, that's for sure.

What are they going to think when you show up in a Pink Charger.

I've been in that position several times too.  But decided I would control my own destiny 20 years ago.  The only dog that eats here is me.

CHALLENGER..AHEM!!
Well,to be honest, there are three other Mopar guys working there-two are mechanics.
They don't care about personal vehicles--just sell,sell,sell.
Heck one salesman rides in on a Hog.

Looks like when it rains, it pours, only this time the rain is a blessing!  Whoo-hoo!  It's got to make you feel good knowing people went to bat for you!

It does.
But the dealership system will not change overnight.
My boss will keep an eye on the others more closely after our little chat.
Ordering our FF R/T tonight!!
