Which type of Power Steering pump do I have?
« on: March 31, 2010, 02:58:54 PM »

I guess the title says it all. I am in the process of trying to find a replacement high pressure power steering hose for my '68 Sport Fury. evidently they discontinued the hose used for Hi Perf engines (it's a larger diameter hose than standard).  Polaraco put me in touch with a man who can help me (thanks again Polaraco) but he needs to know what make pump I have (F-M, Saginaw, TRW, etc.).

How can I identify my pump?

Thanks for any help!

Uncle Hulka

PS - So close to cruising season it hurts.

This is a Mopar Action article R. Ehrenberg did on both pumps, with pics of both units during dis-assembly and re-assembly
Here's the Federal pump (look at last pic)

and then the Saginaw pump

Thanks Mosey! I still can't quite tell what I've got. My eyes aren't as good as they once were and I cant read the tiny print. Is there a way to tell by looking at the pump?

68 big block cars came with the TRW  1.06 pump.
I had no problem getting a HP hose for my two 68 C's.

The 68 had a round one.  Later years had the tear dropped shaped one.  You should have a round one, or the Federal.  The tear dropped one is the Saganaw.

Here's the deal as I know it-'68 CHRYSLERS used the TRW pump with the charming "self adjusting" belt mechanism (last year for it). They stink because of the mounting bracket.

'68 PLYMOUTH C bodies used the Federal pump, as did '69 Chryslers.

I'm in the process of converting all of my '68 Chryslers to the Federal Pump.

Steve I thought I WAS KISS

The numbers refer to the displacement of the pump.

As Rob mentioned,the so-called "self-adjusting" brackets are a joke.
Years of leaks, and general use they do not keep tension on the belt and the pump actually moves around.
The rubber stop is usually gone.

Here is the link to Hoffman's pump brackets;

As shown in my pic,the 68 Plymouth and Chrysler big blocks use the PS003 bracket kit
