74 Scamp -SOLD to the highest bidder
« on: March 24, 2010, 07:32:31 PM »

Any idea what kind of number would be realistic to get this 74 Scamp for at a live auction?  One owner , 19,500 original miles.

What condition is the car?  I've seen low milage cars that were rust buckets.  Do you have some pictures?

a guy out here in NJ wanted 5G's for his 71 ...but I told him the 1 1/2" of bondo on the pass side rocker negated it's garage-kept low miles status

price class high should have A/C and nice interior at least....sounds like a $2,500 - $6,000  car if truly mint and you're the only Mopar nut there.....

1974..Ugly bumpers and bumper guards, ugly steering wheel.Ugly seats with the one piece seatback/headrests.Ugly tailights.
1974..Improved front K frame and disc brakes.Big bolt pattern on the wheels.
318 cars got the 8-1/4 rear compared to the weak 7-1/4 in the slanty.
Already a V-8 car,plopping in a 340 or 360 is pie.
Without any pics, and based on what I saw sold around here,I will guesstimate $3500.00 tops

You and I know that.  But even the ugly big bumper A-bodies are now going for way more than that.  Probably the only Mopars now that are outpacing the market.

'70-72 were nice years for those, I had a gold/black 70 Swinger that I loved...slanty powered.

There's a '74 Scamp for sale in the Bakersifled area, slant 6 auto car.  I've seen it and it's nice, but he's been trying to sell it for over 4 months at $6,500/offer.  It was still in last week's Camera Ads.

Some cars, regardless of their condition, simply do not draw the bucks we would want.

Like my '70 Newport 'vert....

Going to look at it this weekend and try to get some pictures. Supposedly original owner - an old farmer.

Most people do seem to prefer the pre-73 small bumper cars.
Personally  I like that front end better on the Valiants than the later Dart one, and like the Plymouth tailights better than the Dodge version.  (I bought the wrong car, didn't I?)
No argument about the steering wheel, but I've seen enough changed to the earlier style that it must not be too hard to do.

The biggest drawback to a '74 is the seatbelt interlock system, but did the Canadian cars have that?  (pretty easy to bypass anyway)

Check the rear, mine is a factory 318, but I'm pretty sure it's got a 7.25" rear

Gut feeling on the price would be $3K-5K depending on just how nice it is.  Nice 2 doors were going for a little more than that a couple of years ago when I was shopping, but seems like everything is down since then.

hoo boy....as soon as I read it, I knew Dan wasn't gonna appreciate that post

Oh well....I got the same flak for having my freebie 91 Cadd-y Eldo (crap engine, crap car, no bids for it on ebay...etc) yet I am now driving and enjoying it everyday!

Not to worry Dan.
Your car has more than enough character to make up for what Ma put into it..
The seatbelt interlock was a joke and was implemented in Canada, but lasted only one year.It caused many no staert problems and people bypassed it anyways.

BTW,I like your Dart and the story behind it.

Well I had a look at it today.  Current owner is #2 and he bought it from a family friend about 8 years ago. It was stored in an equipment shed on the farm, so it has quite a few "door dings" as well as a few scrapes. Overall it is a very solid car. Looks to be the original paint, and the vinyl top is excellent. It doesn't look like it has had a water problem either.

I don't think these seats are that ugly, nor is the steering wheel. The cloth trim is like new.

It looks like all the hoses have been replaced.

It's got a few flaws, but for the right price, it would be nice to have. Going to go to the auction and see where it goes. Now any ideas how high is too high?

That's a real nice car! Interior is plush for an A body, and I guess A/C wasn't standard with high line cars.
I wouldn't be embarassed to pay $ 4500 for that....

Actually, that looks to be a nice car.
It has the good stuff and an engine upgrade can be done easily.
But at that low mileage, maybe its best kept alone.
