Well, been looking hi & lo for years for a 56 Packard V8 with stick... the Ultramatic with electric solenoid push button is cool, but is finicky, and stick Packards are RARE... but I found this one, where else, on Craigslist, in Missouri.  All original car including original paint and no floor rust. Best of all, 352 V-8 with OverDrive Stick! I'm unable to do anything but light bodywork any more, so the DeSoto went to finance this one, a turn key driver: POLARACO2010-03-13 14:06:27

Thanks Steve - the side view pic still look squashed to me?... I just cannot figure out why this is
happening. I posted 6 pics on my F3 trunk floor work and they came out
fine... Riiiiipppppp! ...sound of me tearing my hair out, or what's
left of it...

Anyhow, pics aside, this is the Plain Jane Packard model, the bottom of
the line. Equivalent hierarchy-wise to a Windsor or Buick Special, but
more expensive than them. Sort of like a really stripped Caddy or
Lincoln, if there'd been such a thing. Big, massive, heavy, powerful
car. Packard would strip off the bells & whistles, but they refused
to compromise on the quality of the drivetrain or the coachwork, to use
the Brit expression for body. The doors on these things clang shut like
bank vaults. They were sort of still living in a lost aristocratic
world of the teens to '30s, when they were THE name in prestige cars,
and couldn't accept that the world had changed to high volume luxo cars
like Cadillac, Lincoln, and Imperial. They just could not compete
costwise, and it killed them. You have to experience one in person to
really appreciate it... real quality from a lost age, that we'll never
see again.

Who knows. Could even be Donkeys. There was one in North Carolina where I bought my Fury.

The Clipper Deluxe 352 V8 had the lowest power engine for '56 Packards
at 240hp and 350 ft /lb torque, still no slouch.  And the
Caribbean 374 with 2 Rochester 4 bbl and 10:1 compression had the
biggest displacement and highest power of ANY car in 1956 at 310hp and
torque of 405 ft/lb!

Packard  wasn't known as "The Master Motor Builder" for nothing - you
should see the huge V12 that they made for PT boats in WWII!  And
the Rolls Merlin V12s that were built by Packard for P-51s put out
significantly more power than the Rolls produced version, AND were more
reliable to boot.

So its a manuel pushbutton? 3 or 4 speed? I really like the way they hid the door handles. Looks like a really nice find!

Some of the body lines remind me of my 54 Firedome. But I guess with the curved front and rear glass, they all had a similar look.

How road worthy is she? It's going to be a driver, right?

That's a pre-requisite to be on this site...I think.

Hell, there's plenty of non-drivers here... I've got one, my Fury
III.  There's no prerequisites to be an idiot, I mean member,
here,  AFAIK... but yes, this Packard runs & drives great. And
it's not an automatic, it's a column shift 3 spd manual, very rare, as
mentioned...
