And the end of the story....

The truck is back together and the trans is as good as new, if not better.

It does still have a fresh rebuild on it, after all but it pulls straigt thru all 3 gears and the noise is in fact gone...thank goodness.

I posted this Q on AMCForum.com and here...both are GREAT....

How are your V8s running?  I officially get 20MPG w/ my truck by the way...I am leaning towards the Summit K8600 because between the price and everyone raves about it over the Edelbrock cam...

This isn't going to happen until the end of summer most likely because I want to convert over to FI while I am there which the Summit cam will work well with due to it's specs. :)

GM TBI, have the harness made, just got the correct computer...just need the fuel pump and adapter plate - I plan on letting the ECU control spark as well...

I learned allot about what to do and not do when working a specific goal.  If you want torque, use a short duration, High lift cam.  That will give you the torque you want.  If you follow the thread through its entirety, you'll know exactly what to do to give you the snot you are looking for.  And it will give you the MPG.  It will probably give you 25 when done.

I have the porting tools here, and I am loaning my other set to Leanburn.  I have another set of heads to do so don't get too far away.  Have a spring compressor and the lapping tool too.

Cam and porting is all you need to do.  Rollers would be a nice upgrade too, and not much more that flat tappets.  Not sure about the upper lubbing on that 390 though.

Get yer pipe and slippers.  LOL
