New 5 speed overdrive auto, or 727?
« on: December 30, 2009, 05:50:18 PM »

Split from another thread...I am looking to get more seat of the pants and more economy from my 62 Newport...I need to rebuild my tranny anyway, so I was looking at upgrading or modifying my current setup...SO how hard is it going to be to swap in a latemodel 5 speed auto into my current setup? Will it even come close to mating up to the 361? What about a gear vendors unit behind a 727? I really want to go overdrive, and am just looking into options....Anyone done this?

It can be done, but you have to deal with the electronics.  They have electronic govonors in them that are computer dependant.

Go manual

Electonics aren't a huge deal...my road race mustang has lots of electronic stuff on it, and it give me all the manual tranny I would ever want....I just want a nice cruising laid back big car.

Well if your looking for just the overdrive then your easiest would be the Gearvendors unit.

The 727 is a bullet proof tranny and cheap to rebuild compared to the more modern 4/5 speed auto's.  Plus with the GV unit you actually end up with a 6 speed.

I'm thinking  about a Gear Vendors unit in the future....unless the 727 craps out in my Imperial, then it'll be a 518 with an Ultrabell

The 727 and 2.73s give you a real nice 2200rpm at 65mph, equates to 138mph at 5200rpm (trust me on that, and with a 361 to boot). The 518 is a good overdrive small block bolt pattern swap behind big blocks and electronics is easy, they have kits for that and doesn't require a computer to wire (easiest of the big three). GearVendors is six gears, but it is a lot more than a 518 and components (and you still have to redo the driveline and rebuild your 727 on top of it all), but both will require some floorboard work. Stay away from the MB tranny, they aren't that good, just expensive.

Remember those assholes that had that supposed "merger of equals" then bragged about suckering the stockholders with a sixty cents on the dollar deal takeover, then sucked the life out of Chrysler before dumping her? Yeah, them. Anything over four speeds in rear wheel drive is a mercedes bends tranny.

Yeah the "Corp Killers"  I got ya now.

I read they are planning on dumping those transmissions for a Fiat trans with a 7 speed.  Wow.  Where does it end.
