Question:
 
In a C-body, if there was a 4 speed behind a BB, do you think a 3 speed manual tranny would be a drop-in?

yes...and no.  While the physical dimensions MIGHT be close (and don't quote me on that) I don't think Ma offered a 3 speed manual behind a big block in a C-body,  probably for good reason.

Then again there's lots of stuff in this world I'm not aware of, and since you and Steve are almost older than this country, I'm sure you guys have seen plenty of weird stuff like what you're asking about to prove me wrong

I've dug through my 1968 FSM and it appears that you could get a 383/2bbl with a column shifted 3 speed manual.

 
If you opted for the 4bbl I think that got you the floor shifted 4 speed.

Moesy,sorry but I have to correct you.
Three speed manual transmissions were standard equipment in C bodies for years and 1970 was the last year for them.1971 automatic transmissions were standard equipment in C's
A good few 61 to 64 Chryslers with 361's and 383 2bbls had the floor shift 3 speed manual.
65 and up were three on da tree.
Moore's has/had a 65 300 4dr hardtop with 3 on da tree.
My 68 Newport specs show the 383 2bbl came with the row yer own with the 727 upgrade for extra cost.
Fuselage website shows 1970 factory brochures/specs backing it up.

If you'er going to use a 3-speed, I highly recommend the A230.  It was considered the "Heavy-Duty" trans and was used on many V8s in Mopar cars and trucks.  It's near bullit-proof!
