What Motor should this be?
« on: November 25, 2009, 04:11:44 PM »

I picked up a 70 Polara 2dr ht today. Appears to be a HP 383 as it is a four barrel and has the HP exhaust manifolds.  The engine code in the vin is L. Is that correct for the motor/ Thanks in advance for the answer.

Gonna make me drag out the secret code book huh?

H is for a High Perf 383
L is for a high Perf 440

If you got one of those, you better take care of that sucker

440? Wow, I need to get a good look at it in the daylight. I just assumed it was a 383. It was already dark when it got dropped off. I'll post pics tommorrow. azblackhemi2009-11-26 00:19:54

Chris,further investigation is needed.
Double check the block #'s,etc..
If that car is a factory HP440 4bbl car it is a rare beast.

I will get it on my lift tommorrow and check block numbers. It does have the L code in the VIN though. Lea, can you tell by the fender tag?

I just decoded the fender tag. The L code is for the 290 horse 383 2bbl. The 4bbl and HP manifolds must have been added or the motor has been swapped. I'll check numbers on the block tommorrow.

That's not what my book says.  We have a conflict. . .  Maybe my book is wrong?  Or yours is.
