I was wondering if someone can help me out here.
I going to be purchasing a steering gearbox from NAPA to replace the one om my 72 Imp, but here lies the question: NAPA has 2 part numbers listed, 88277066 for $159.00, $138.50 (core) and 88277093 for $152.99, $33.30 (core). What is the difference? What about that core price?? There's a pretty big difference.
I've already investigated Steer & Gear and Firm Feel for a rebuild, but that route is a little pricey, so I'll try this first.

While you have that apart, check the rag coupler on the column too.  I don't know if you can still get them or not.  Also you may as well rebuild the slide yoke on the box as well.  The kits for those are all over the place.  They were all the same for all the bodies

Steer & Gear quoted me a price of $285 for the steering gear unit. They'd relace the bearings and add shims if I wanted the steer to feel like todays vehicles. Another $105 for the steering coupler. OUCH! (I'm sure they'd do a nice job though)

I went with Steer and Gear to rebuild/shim the unit out of my '65 300 and I couldn't be happier.  They also rebuilt my coupler and also supplied me with the correct "hockey puck" joint.

Some of the confusion lies in that 72 back had 2 different sector shaft sizes.    Usually the Full size cars got the large sector & A-B-E's got the smaller one.    Yours should be a large sector.

73 up they supposedly all went to the Large Sector shaft.  The bolt pattern & overall size is the size for all power boxes with the same column shaft size.  Only the sector is different.

If you can send your box back through a local store for rebuild you should be assured of getting the right one back.   A friend sent his that way.   Steer & Gear & Firm Feel both are a bit more expensive but they do more that just rebuild,  they tighten them up to the specs you want.    I've got a S&G stage II in the Dart & a Stage III in the Fury.

coupler kits are no more than 20.00 from a lot of vendors & the Rag joints are available from Bouchillon for 80.00 or so.
