All I wanted to do was to go get some lunch, and while cranking the ignition I suddenly hear a *BAM!*

No.  That was a picture a posted a few years ago by me when I backfired my Fury.  That was a new Accurate Exhaust system with less than 500 miles.
The sheriff came to the house a little while later because someone in the neighborhood reported a bomb going off.  True story.

Wow....I saw the factory dents on the ends of the mufflers, just like Hemis had. My new ones didn't come with the dents. I forgot where that pic was from....hiding amongst the hundreds of thousands of MB in my photo file!

You better find out what caused it before you replace that Muffler. . .  Dist Cap with carbon tracks, timing too far advanced, loadeding up with fuel. . .

Just for starters.

From the looks of it, the seam on the muffler was leaking for quite a while. . .  Maybe the Seam just let go?

No, it was a back-fire loud enough to set off the alarm of the Toyota that was next to me....someone though it was a shotgun going off

Burned valve, loading up, sticking exhaust valve, lifter, nut loose behind the wheel, and everything I mentioned above.  Maybe a bad rotor, crossed ignition wires which are leaking to each other.

Bob showed a picture of the mufflers on Polaraco.  That was an Accell racing coil.  Apparently my computer isn't powerful enough to drive the bigger coil.

It had been leaking for a while probably from being parking in front of a house for several years before I bought it.  The guy who lived there would start the engine and let it run for 15 to 20 minutes or so.

Not bad for a 42 year old American made muffler, right?

Nope, not any more.  Tomorrow I'll see a muffler shop, might be able to get a new one installed for just under $100.
