'58 'sweep - under the rug no more!!
« on: November 01, 2009, 04:00:32 AM »

FINALLY, after 6 months of waiting and frustration! Tomorrow the Sweep
is going to get started on body rejuvenation!!!!  An old family
friend worked at Miller Dodge dealer body shop for 30 yrs, retired but
still does work in his complete home shop. Ironically, his name is
Hemmy, short for Hemenway, and he's hard to get.  He was supposed
to start back in APRIL, but a '58 Corvette took him way longer than it
was supposed to - I told him get that POS out of there so he could work
on a REAL car... and now he''s ready.  Here's a pic of DeSi on the
way to storage this time last year - the same tow guy will be taking it
out of storage and about 20 miles tomorrow to Port Crane. When the
metal patch fabrication is done, I'm going to lead it, filler-prime,
and final paint will probably be farmed out as I'm too picky to do it
myself, I'd never be satisfied - colors:  1961 Plymouth
Lavender Metallic, with Arctic White top and side spear

I hope you post a lot of pics on the progress.  I'll really be interested in watching this resto.
Good luck with it.

Will get some more tomorrow hopefully - I took out seats & carpet
and cleaned everything down to solid metal - what there was of it - on
floors & trunk. The exterior metal is pretty good, but I'm having
previous crap work on 1/4s and doglegs re-done with flange welds so
coutours are perfect.  I'll do floor and trunk when it gets
back.  Took R bumper etc off before it went. There's only
something like 8 or 10  '58 FireSweep Sportsman 4 dr Hardtops left
- I want to do it right, meaning slow, because of funds and because I
work slow in general. Good because I'm having a devil of a time
deciding on paint. It changes weekly.

Given today's scarcity of your DeSi,I would highy suggest to paint her factory original colors.
Your paint code should be on the body tag on the firewall or fender.

I heay ya Lea, the factory colors are still on it, I don't need to
decode it, the car is all original.  And normally I'd agree, but I
just don't like white.  That woould be the ONLY thing changed,
except for the tires.  And it could always be changed back later,
if my kids want to.  It will be a color that DeSoto SHOULD have
had in '58, imo.  It's a '61 Mopar color. This is my dream
car...  I looked for 30 yrs to find it.  White just doesn't
fit what I've envisioned all that time. I've thought about just
reversing the colors:  blue with white side sweep. That is still a
possibility. I have a blue interior and have to work with that, it's
just too expensive to change that out too. Decisions, decisions.

Yes, trouble is I have a '71 Fury and '70 Nova, both the same shade of
blue dark blue!! - see the avatar!  I'm not that interested in
historical accuracy, more in making it look like I want... so it
probably won't be blue.  It will be a period correct late 50s
color however.
