From Canada to US
« on: October 19, 2009, 06:46:18 PM »

Has anyone ever had a car shipped from Canada to the US? In my case it could be from Ontario Canada to NY state. Just wondering what's involved and if there's a lot of BS/$$ involved.
Thanks, Bob

I know you need inpeckable paper work and have to pay imports on it. So declare is low.  You'll need a bill of sale and a title.  But I think you need a US title to get it over.

Where is our resident smuggler when you need him?

Paperwork must be submitted 72 hours at Customs prior to car crossing the border.
The undercarraige  must be CLEANED prior to crossing--no foriegn soil and no personal belongings inside the car.
Basically, they check the VIN to make sure the car is legit and not stolen. Also they check to see if the VIN matches all other VIN stampings in the body to make sure it is not a parts car.
cars that cross and are listed as parts cars will be branded and can never get registered for road use.
All other questions (taxes, duties, etc.) can be answered by checking out this web link:

Thanks guys...Yeh, I've been reading up on it...Sounds like one could take a big chance if you buy and then find out at the border that something is not right. After all...buying a 40 -50 year old car...a lot can happen during all those years.  I think you basically have to do ALL your homework and be 99% sure all is well. That undercarriage/dirt thang surprised me....yet another load of BS to deal with....Oh well...Thanks for all the info. guys...I'm going to fughetabouit. I'm not into smuggling either...I checked into shipping too....BIG BUCKS for 200 miles...Thanks. I'll stay in the states...and close to home.

Thought about that...The guy is not willing to do that because the car is not roadworthy. Those are very old photos.
