nasty gas tank prep w/ 1 scary pic
« on: October 11, 2009, 01:03:19 PM »

I'd say that for me one of the worst jobs is underside floor work: dirt
in the eyes, hair, nose, ears,  everything. Today was really great
outside, so I figured might as well clean up the underside, axle back,
before the new tank goes in.  Here's pics, including a scary one
of the Double Chin Model Mk II Rust-Dust Prophylactic Filter that's mandatory for
avoidance of silicosis.

Lots & lots of red clay dirt &
dust, but amazingly solid metal so far - over the tank even the trunk
underfloor original black paint/primer is still excellent.  It'll
all get coated with
something rust-proofing before the tank gets remounted. For protection
I also wiped the tank with reducer and shot it all over with clear
satin enamel. Hoses will be replaced, and I'll keep the hose box that's
still mounted on the car instead of the one that's on the tank because
it's in better shape. I blew an amazing amout of clay crud out of the
subframe boxes with the air gun and my 20 yr old Sears5 hp compressor.
I think most of it went directly on me. Clean!!

Can anyone idendify this?  Kinda looks like a cross between Bozo the clown and Mr. Rogers.

Make sure you have all that rust cleaned up under there or the floor will go.

Well ya got the Roger part right at least!
I warned you it was scary! And yep, it'll get Por 15 on everything,
just got some...there's literally
no cancer at all, that rust in the upper L corner of the floor pic is
just the exhaust pipe... the frame & floors have only very minor
shallow surface rust, however it'll
all get treated well anyway...
I've never seen such a solid floor on an Eastern car, I wonder if red
clay is some kind of preservative!  The old lady had to have lived
on a dirt road, there was so much of it.

Pressure wash that with some wax stripper.  POR doesn't like dirt.  IT actually may be a bad choice where there is no rust..

You could use some of that spray bed liner.  Wal-Mart has it.  Stuff sticks to everything but grease and rust.

What is wax stripper? Can I use it in a paint gun, or does it need a pressure washer.

Another thought was oiling it - I saw a Ford p/u truck once in Vermont,
maybe early mid' 70s vintage, they always rusted out. Had to be at
least 25 yrs old when I saw it, looked like brand new. You just don't
see that there. I axed him how the F he did that in salt & rust
country. He said he coated the entire underside with oil every fall...
made a believer out of me.  Never tried it though.

Hey that dog stole my hat!

Tell me more about wax stripper!  What's in it, why would that be good for cleaning the bottom,  how to do it?

I was thinking Wilson, the neighbor from Home Improvement.

Either way, good to see safety equipment being used.
