Bit the bullet and pulled her tank - what a day!, 70s and
sunny,so  if not now, when? good thing too, I found pin holes on
the top - under the rub mat - it must have held moisture, because
otherwise this car is unbelievably solid, here are some  pics of
it, and the mighty 318...

Odd, since the tank looked so good - the area in the shadow had 4 small
holes as if it had rusted from inside, and a label says there's an
inner and outer tank!  Also 5 hoses went into this thing..??

You can see some of the holes to the R of the lower 2 hoses... strange,
since the top of the tank looked so clean otherwise.   Now I need
a tank!!

You can get aftermarket tanks.  With all that smog crap or without.

There's a product called Seal-all...it is fuel resistant and seals excellent...for a few small pin holes on the top of the tank I would be tempted to try this first.
 
I use this stuff on the small caps on the bottom of the fuel bowls in the TQ carbs.  They loosen and leak after years of use and this product seals them up perfectly.
 
Just an idea.

The 5 hoses went into a vapor cannister--sorta like a charcoal cannister.
You can bypass the can but make sure you maintain the main feed to the engine,and return line from the engine.
Cap the rest and use a vented gas cap.

Watch yourself on the capping. . .  I learned the hard way.  I ended up making this even with a vented cap, which leaks anyway.  Part of the problem is the EFI

No the 318 is OK, we ran it on a can, just took a pic of it to show it.

Don't have to worry about EFI on this baby!
 


I poked at the holes and the pin holes became yawning
apertures... tank is toast!  I'd guess it was condensation on the
inner top since the tank is almot full. Seems like leaving everything
dry including the carb is the way to go for really long term storage.



The cannister is just the ususal
evaporative cannister right? Didn't all cars have 'em, starting right
around '71? (just my luck)...

So what's a good (Non-Chinee) source for aftermarket tanks? , and should I keep the
evap can or just sh_tcan it? It doesn't affect performance any right? If not I'd sooner just leave it. But if so, with a
stock 318 I need all I can get.

Spectra Premium maunfactures C body tanks.

They are a Canadian company yet Americans can get the tank cheaper than us Canucks.
They are available through NAPA or AUtoZone,etc.
Part # CR20C with 4 vents.
They are NOT cheap to buy new,so do some shopping aropund and sometimes the best price may be found on E bay.
If you have a passport come on up and get a tank I have that has been coated.It just has a few dents in it.
