Old tires are bad
« on: August 18, 2009, 08:41:01 PM »

Here is a pic of one of the "new" tires I bought last year-- after decoding the DOT code on the sidewall  it turns out it is already seven years old and way past it's prime. It did not survive a wild burnout a couple days ago.

You only had that tire mounted for one year, and it's worn that bad on one side?  How is your alignment?

I've had that set on for about a year and a half, and that tire was on the drivers side front until last month. The torsion bar on that side needs some adjusting as the car sags a bit, and it did have some wear on the outside tread.  I ground quite a bit more off that side doing a nasty donut for a cop friend and his buddies (a real Nascar victory type donut for several minutes) until the steel belt inside the tire let go and made that huge hump. At least I think it was the belt separating, but whatever the cause the tire is junk.

What made me mad was that it was already so old when I bought it--and the other three were also not "NEW" when installed (they are already four years old). Anyway I'm getting a whole new set from the tire shop that sold them to me - they are replacing the ancient one for free, and the others on a pro-rated basis since they are newer than six years old. I just haven't decided which tires to go with:
option one is a set of BFG Radial T/A's for $120
option two is a set of Firestone Firehawk Indy 500's for $175
option three is a set of Kumho Solis KR21's for free.

What size?
Most of the older sizes are drying up and some have been sitting around.
Abusing the tires sure do shorten their life-as you already know.

They will be 235x70x15's--not many companies are making that size now, most tire places around here have tons of the slightly bigger 235x75's, but they are all light truck tires.

I never had a problem with Coopers, my old 79 Codoba I put a set of Cooper Cobra Radial GTs, did tons of burn outs and never had a problem.

I always thought Firestones were explode-o-matics

Lots of the Firestone tires made in the 90's and put on Ferd Exploders were bad, esp. when run too fast underinflated.

Cooper tire actually has several people on their payroll that go around an collect all their tire carcasses from the roadsides in  AZ, and even the tire dealers try to steer people away from using them. They probably work great in cooler climates, just not here.

Well, I ended up going with the FREE Kumho Solis KR21's-They rate extremely well on Tire Racks survey, and they do  ride nice and smooth and very quiet.  The shop also found me a decent spare (free) and mounted and balanced it for free too, so I'm very happy with them again.
