Howdy all,
 
Ok, so I bought some KYB's for the 68 SF.  I've got the rears on no sweat, I took off the Lt front and after debating , I cut the retaining strap and put on the inner/ lower washer and bushing.  The OEM set up had a inner bushing sleeve in the  one piece bushing-bumper, I don't see a replacement nor is it indicated in the pictograph instructions.  (hate those btw) is that sleeve necessary?  it doesn't appear to fit.
 
Is there a trick to keeping the new shock compressed while one inserts/ threads it into place?  Thing is tougher than I am.  After 6 attempts of compressing the shaft against the frame and not being quick enough to position it(the entire time being eaten by mosquitos) I said enough for the night.  I'll try again tomorrow.

Well the sleeve is just there to protect the shaft so throw it away.  I thought you needed to loosen off the torsion bars and then pull the lower control arm down to get a bit of extra clearance to get the new shock up and in place.
 
But you could compress the shock and the make a small rope to capture the shock and keep it compressed, then wiggle it into place and then cut the rope off once the shock is up where it needs to be.

I don't know how different the '68 is from a '70, but to install the front shocks on my car I needed to do the follwoing:
 
1. Unload the torsion bars - loosen the main adjusting nut on the bottom of the lower control arm.
 
2. Take of the drums.
 
3. Remove the lower two brake plate bolts which hold on the lower control arm to the knuckle.
 
4. Remove the lower mounting bolt on the shock and work it free from the shock.
 
5. Loosen the top shock nut and watch the shock slowly drop free from the shock tower.
 
To install the shocks the above is reversed.
 
I hope I didn't skip a step; I'm writing this from memory.

Well Ithink Snotty might be right on this one...I did mine when I rebuilt the front end so it was easy to do it then.  But to change them out once the front end is together is going to be a pain regardless.

That's an oddity, my old shock  plunger retracted into the body, the KYB ejects the rod. 
 
If it retracted I'd have another dilemma of trying to capture the top threads.
 
I'll try a wire to hold the compression then go with Snotty's steps.  oy!

quick question on removing the front drums, can they be beaten off with a hammer, alternating strike points or do I need a puller?

If you don't cut the straps before installing, they'll sneak right in.  It's tight, but they do go in.  Once in, then you can cut the strap and catching the nut is no problem.  You have to cut the strap anyway to get it through the bushing.  I've done it a dozen times

I saved the strap this time.  It may not compress the shaft enough, if not, I've got the 3/8 nylon rope waiting to go.  Doing the other side this weekend.
 
off topic, I bought a craftsman roller jack/creeper/jackstand set and I am no longer a dirt back primate using whatever screw jack I can scrounge!  I know- what in the heck took me so long?  Money went into parts not comfort items.  But I'm getting there.  Air tools are next on the list.

Ha! No, i did have a few jack stands around before buying this set, I've never had a creeper or a rolling floor jack.
