I have never had this problem before...anyone else run into this?

No....not for that reason (because it's starving for air)...but I've knocked off vacuum hoses before and that has affected the idle.  I guess if there was a second hole for incoming air and you for sure haven't inadvertantly pulled off a vacuum hose...cut away! Its a good thing you discovered this!

If you don't care about the originality. . . Get a cold air filter.  They have a shield in them that keeps the hot engine air out of the air cleaner.  And they flow better.  Try looking at one for a V8 92-94 Dakota.  I think that's the one I used on Polaraco.

Steve...I kinda care about an original look though.....I would like to have tubes running to the rad support or inner wheel houses to draw cool air into the carb...but then I loose that original appearance.
 
Heck just going with a proper dual snorkle air cleaner would probably help since it wouldn't be pulling the air off the top of the motor but from in in front of the motor.
 
Anyone have a 68-ish oval dual snorkle top they want to sell...Leaburn??

I hear ya. . .That's why I worded it the way I did.
 
Try putting it back on with the element out and see what happens.  Maybe you just need a different air filter.

Well the K&N only has about 2000 miles on it so it shouldn't be plugged yet?
 
Thuink I'm going to cut a piece of cardboard and then pull the top off and put the cardboard over the top of the aircleaner element and if it boggs down then I know I have a crappy filter...if not then the air cleaner needs more air!!

They are pretty restrictive for the big blocks.  Don't take me wrong, they are a good filter, but I think you will fine it will probably run better with a standard filter.
 
Funny thing about K&N.  They are outlawed on Diesels.  The let too much junk in and chew up the turbos

Well I totally bought the propaganda...
 
I will go get a paper filter and run that...I really could care less if it's an oil soaked cotton or paper I was under the impression that the K&N would filter more dirt out then the paper...Guess I was wrong!!

It does filter more dirt Brian. . . Is it possible you oiled it too much?  You are only supposed to have a thin coat on it.  It's not supposed to be gobbed with oil.  If that's the case, soak it in some simple green or equal, and wash it up.  Then stick it back in.  I learned about this on the diesel forum.  That's where I found out K & N is not good on a diesel.  But I ma not sure if the filter material is different on the diesel vs. the car.  I just read Chrysler will not warranty a cummins engine if it has a K & N on it.  I use AFE
 
Filtering more dirt means a tighter weave.
