So I've just taken the fuel pump out - I figure while I'm doing all this other work to the engine why not replace it?  I mean, who knows when I'll have such easy access to it again?  Plus it's got near 100K on it.  The timing seems right.



I have a few questions, though. 

1) Do I need to lubricate the arm of the new pump before installing it?  When the old one came out it was pretty greasy.  Is that some kind of special lubricant or was that just engine oil?

2) What type of new pump should I get?  I want a strong, robust pump that's not going to break easily.  But I don't want to get the wrong pump.  I don't think I need a "racing" or "high volume" one, you know?  Or do I?

Any thoughts?

Yeah not a bad idea while you're there.     If I'm at home I use Moly paste on the arm.   Good ole STP would work fine too or just motor oil.     If I have to change one on the road I've just stuck em' on with nothing & they're still okay.   Anything you put is gonna help.

Stock replacement is fine,  just pay a bit more for a good one.   A lot of the stores have different grades.

The "grease" you saw is most likely sludged oil @ 100K.  Mileage will do that.

If you're on the road, pull the dip stick out a few times.

Nope,  I fix mine so they don't break!   So there.

You can also stick your finger in the fuel pump hole & get some  oil off the walls in there too.

It just isn't that big of any issue.

I've never lubed the fuel pump arm before installation...never even occured to me to do it.
 
I'm still running the same fuel pump that's been on the 440 for probably close to 20 years...if it aint broke don't fix it!

"Moly paste?"  Whazzat?  And the only STP I know of is a fuel additive.  Do they make lubricants, too?  Arrgh!  I'm such a rookie at this.

Do I really need the extra 40 gph the second one provides?  That seems like a lot.  Is the 2nd pump a racing pump?

All you need for your motor is a name brand stock OEM replacement pump.
Carter or ACDelco. They'll last until the car collapses from rust and they're under 30 bucks at your local parts store.  Why pay for shipping?

Exactly!   no need ordering a stock pump,  just run down to the local parts house & get a decent one.  Just don't get the cheapest.

Moly paste is an assembly lube for motors.    STP oil treatment has been around longer than I have!   Real thick lube & good for protection on initial fireup until oil circulates good.   Check the parts houses for it.   Course plain old engine oil will do too!

Like Brian said he's  never used anythng & not had a problem.    So anything you put on the arm is just good insurance.

Moly paste is a good idea, and a definate if this was a rebuild.  It allows for lube before oil pressure comes up.  A new motor is totally dry before it's first run.  Since your motor is a runner, there will already be presence of oil on the pump cam.
 
Albeit, I always lube one before I install.  As I said, it's a good idea, even if unneccasary.
