Pertronix ignitors 1381A
« on: June 01, 2009, 06:50:51 AM »

Hey guys, I'm thinking about getting rid of my old stock points in my 1969 Fury (318) and upgrading to this particular electronic ignition. Pertronix Ignitors 1381A. Has anyone used this particular brand/model for their 62-72 318 V8? Did the conversion go smoothly? Does it perform well as it's advertised? Is this price as good as it gets?

Thanks, Bob

Lesseee...71 Coronet,318,The NY'er,The Boab,My buddy Ray's 66 318 Poly,and a whole pile of customers at my shop.
Any problems?? NO
As mentioned,go with a fresh coil with the upgrade.
You can bump up your timing ,gap the plugs a little more and fatten the idle mixture for better response and overall fuel economy and will have great bottom end pick up.
Just install the kit, hook up the positive wire to the + of the coil and the black wiore to the - of the coil.Done.Fine tune from there.
I find it easier to install with the dizzy out of the car.Make sure you mark where the rotor is pointing, that's all.

Does this Pertronix Ignitor (link below)...replace the points and condensor or just the points. I want to buy tuneup parts for my 69 Fury 318...just wondering what parts I should not buy if I order the Pertronix in the mean time...The ad doesn't explain...I suppose I could contact the seller...but it just might be easier asking you guys...if you know what I mean...

No Prob Bob

All you really need is the distributor kit.  It uses the stock rotor and is easy as heck to install.  It's like setting a set of points, but easier.  Gives a heck of a spark

A friend of mine just put one on his 59 Savoy and is VERY happy with it he said,"Why didn't I do this first!!!"  He has a tri-power set up on it (put on by the previous owner) and couldn't get it to run right so he put the Petronics on it out of the blue and he says its like a new car it runs sooooooo much better!!!! I say go for it!!!

I've been thinking about doing this as well.  Looked on ebay a couple of times over the last week, but didn't see what I needed.

Now I see there are 2 "r"s in pertronix

Two questions,

There seems to be the Ignitor, and the Ignitor II   any thoughts on whether the II is worth the extra money.

THe ignitor I kit will do you just fine,Dan.
In my opinion, running an old coil with the upgrade is like running a new alternator with a bad battery---not a good idea.
Using a fresh coil with the Pertronix allows you to take full advantage of the upgrade.Using your old coil is OK,but for the 40 bux it takes for a fresh one-why not?

And just to answer your question Bob,  the points & condenser go away with the Pertronix.  You still use the rotor & of course the cap.

I've only put one in a customers car & it was a vast improvement.    Course I'm still partial to the factory conversion myself but the Pertronix works just as good & is cheaper by far.

Do it,  you'll love it.

Yes...Thank you for answering my question Butch...So as I'm waiting for my Ignitor I and Flamethrower coil to come in the mail...I can get the rest of the tune up parts (less the points + condensor)...That's exactly what I was looking for. Thanks Butch!! I guess its "been there done that" for all these guys...They skimmed over my question...but you see...I've never done the conversion...so now I'll know...Thanks again...

No...not post jumpers Steve....maybe skimmers!  You are such a humble man Steve...Thank you so much...no apology necessary though. Most of you guys have fixed so many cars/problems that you just skim/ miss the very basic "stunad" (that's italiano for stupid) questions that I ask...Butch fixed me up, so no problem buddy...I wrote the e-bay guy selling them... Here's what he wrote...Thought you guys might be interested in this:

Thanks back for the info.I want you to try something when you get this combo????Install the Ignitor and test drive it and see how well it preforms and then come back and install the coil?I did that to my shop truck when I had some extra time on my hands.I was running the Ignitor for about a year with might have been a 25yr old coil and I THOUGHT IT WAS RUNNING GOOD,hahhaha.I replaced the old coil with the new Pertronix coil and it made a huge difference that the truck even SOUNDED different. From that day forward,I was convinced that a person that buys the Ignitor really needs a good, fresh coil to get the best results possible. If you like, email me back your # and I can call you.I will be here at the 1- 850 -857-1084 till about 8pm tonight.    thanks    Matt

This adds ammo to what Leaburn said!!  LeaburnThumbs up to you buddy!
Oh...by the way, He sells the combo (ignitor I and flamethrower coil for $103.00...that's with shipping) I thought that was good....$70.00 just for the Ignitor I...so that's only $33.00 for the coil. This is the cheapest price I have found...by a lot...Here's the link again for any of you guys that may be interested in purchasing...

We install Pertronix at my shop often.
I have three very good mechanics that dont mind working on the old stuff, and I am confident in their workmanship.
This 58 Buick came in after the owner spent big bux at the local Buick dealer  thinking "they know these cars".I told him the people who used to work  with these cars on a regular basis are retired or pushing daisies.
It came in after it blew out both mufflers after backfiring since the points and timing and carb were so messed up.It could not drive itself out of a wet paper bag and idled way too high.
After installing Cherry Bombs,Pertronix, setting the carb up the car now purrs like a kitten.I also sold him the bias wide whites, too!!
He drives the wheels off this thing and loves the sound of the big 364 4bbl.
